Marketing & Communications Consultant

Santa Cruz Permaculture is seeking a highly competent, outgoing, detail-oriented, and driven person to join our team as a Marketing & Communications Consultant. This position supports our courses and farm through marketing, including social media (primarily Facebook and Instagram), e-newsletters, online advertisements (Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram Ads), graphics and flyers, sales, logistical and organizing support, as well as communication with our instructors, students, customers, prospective students & customers, and community partners.

An ideal candidate for this position is a self-starter who is motivated and a team player. We’re looking for someone who can work independently but also maintain clear and consistent communication. About Santa Cruz Permaculture

Santa Cruz Permaculture provides community development, land stewardship, holistic education, farming, and eco-social design services for a thriving, just and sustainable world. We teach courses on topics such as permaculture design, permaculture food forestry, herbalism, and more. We also offer permaculture consultations and landscape design services. Location

This position is primarily remote. Santa Cruz Permaculture farm is located near Davenport, CA and our target audience is the greater San Francisco Bay Area & Monterey Bay Area.

Contract Length

This is a 6-month independent contractor position with the strong possibility of continued work beyond the initial contract. The last person in this position worked for 4 years, for example.

Responsibilities

Marketing – Core Duties – 25-50%

  • Create and manage Google and social media ads
  • Monitor and generate quarterly analytics
  • Manage creation and organization of marketing content by students and others
  • Post content on social media on a consistent basis as part of an overall marketing strategy
  • Create email newsletters in Mailchimp for courses and CSA
  • Create flyers and social media graphics, and manage distribution
  • Copywriting for all marketing materials
  • Engage in communications with community partners for course & farm marketing
  • Update website and calendar on a regular basis
  • Help with farm produce sales as needed
  • Update weekly produce availability and CSA inventory
  • Plan and attend occasional marketing events on the farm and in the region

Communications and Courses – Core Duties – 50-60%

  • Communicate with instructors and field trip hosts
  • Communicate course logistics to current students before and after each class
  • Respond to inquiries from prospective students
  • Create and update course materials, schedules, etc. in coordination with course instructors
  • Manage student enrollment process and makeup schedule

Other Responsibilities – 25%

  • Write occasional articles for the Santa Cruz Permaculture blog
  • Organize and maintain database of photos, videos, and other digital files
  • Regular Zoom or phone meetings with Santa Cruz Permaculture team members
  • Other tasks and projects as agreed upon by both parties

Required Qualifications

  • Experience creating and running print, social media, and Google ads
  • Experience using Mailchimp to create e-newsletters
  • Experience managing social media marketing plans and posting content to social media
  • Experience with customer relations
  • Experience creating digital flyers and graphics
  • Strong computer skills (email, Google Apps, video conferencing, etc.)
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • High level of attention to detail and time management
  • Dependable with thorough follow through
  • Ability to receive and willingly integrate constructive feedback
  • Ability to work within a team and with a high level of autonomy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a 6-month course with Santa Cruz Permaculture
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (marketing, communications, etc.)
  • Familiarity with ecological and social problems/solutions of our times
  • Experience managing Youtube channel and supporting the creation of new promotional videos
  • Experience in sales

Hours and Pay

  • This position is 5-15 hours/week. Hourly rate is $20-25 per hour, commensurate with experience.
