Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).


Your Role & Our Team

IRB Barcelona seeks to recruit an experienced Lab Technician to join the lab of Dr. Núria López-Bigas at the IRB Barcelona (http://bbglab.irb.barcelona.org ).

We are looking for a motivated and experienced individual with teamwork skills to join Dr. Núria López-Bigas team focused on the study of cancer from a genomics perspective. We are particularly interested in the study of mutational processes in human cells, the identification of cancer driver mutations, genes and pathways across tumor types, and the study of their potential as therapeutic targets. We use a combination of computational biology and experimental approaches. The candidate will perform experimental work within the project “Discovering the molecular signatures of cancer PROMotion to INform prevENTion" (PROMINENT) funded by Cancer Research UK (Ref: CGCATF-2021/100008), National Cancer Institute (Ref: 1OT2CA278668-01) and Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer.

The BBGLab is a strong interdisciplinary and international research team with unique expertise in the analysis of tumor genomics data. Publications in http://bbglab.irbbarcelona.org


Key responsibilities

  • Work efficiently and cooperatively with a team of researchers in support of projects.
  • Perform established experimental procedures.
  • Cell culture and molecular biology techniques.
  • NGS library preparation.
  • Support writing protocols and documents for CEIm ( Ethical Committee approvals)
  • Support in Lab administrative procedures ( SAP, purchasing, …)
  • Assist in the preparation of biological samples and histological procedures.
  • Read literature relevant to research areas as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.


You have

  • Experience: Prior practical experience in NGS library preparation. Prior practical experience in cell culture and molecular biology (western blot, genome editing technologies, PCRs, RNA isolation…).
  • Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry or related areas.
  • Skills: Strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Fluency in English. Candidates should have the ability to work independently and within a collaborative research team, and possess excellent organisation skills.


You might also have

  • Experience: Experience in participation in international projects. More than 4 years experience.
  • Knowledge: Duplex Sequencing library preparation.
  • Skills: Electronic notebook and sample storage and inventory managing skills will be favourably considered. Experience manipulating human samples.

  • Working conditions: Permanent Contract (científico-técnico) linked to the project PROMotion to INform prevENTion" (PROMINENT). Employed in compliance with Spanish legislation and regulations under a full-time contract.
