Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.
The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.
IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).
Your Role & Our Team
IRB Barcelona is seeking an Junior Scientific Computing Technician to work at the Information Technology and Services Department at the IRB Barcelona.
This position is financed by the project collaborative data platform for research institutes 4.0, financed by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service, and the European Union – Next Generation EU.
Key responsibilities
- Manage and optimize high-performance, distributed storage systems.
- Manage environments based on S3, parallel and multiprotocol storage (NFS, CIFS).
- Support the integration of storage infrastructures with scientific computing platforms.
- Implement backup, archiving and replication policies for biomedical data.
- Guarantee the security and traceability of data access in accordance with current regulations.
- Automate storage management and monitoring processes.
- Provide technical support to users and researchers on the efficient use of storage.
You have
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or related fields. Alternatively, Higher Vocational Training degree and one year of experience in Scientific Computing environments.
- Knowledge of storage systems administration (S3, Lustre, WekaFS, MinIO).
- Experience with backup, replication and data auditing tools.
- Scripting skills for automation in Linux environments.
- Familiarity with data protection regulations (GDPR, NIS 2, ENS).
- Ability to work in a team and learn in research environments.
- High level of technical English and communication skills.
