Job Description:

About Thunes: Thunes is a global, fast-growing, and innovative Fintech scale-up that uses technology to disrupt and transform the existing financial system. We are proud to power payments for the world's fastest-growing businesses and work with some amazing global brands - from Gig Economy giants such as Uber and Deliveroo and Southeast Asia's super-app Grab, to global Fintech leaders such as PayPal and Remitly. Our Products help to drastically simplify the Payment integration experience for our customers: with a single, simple connection, businesses and consumers can send payments to - and get paid in - every corner of the world. Instantly. Thunes is headquartered in Singapore with regional offices in London, Barcelona, Paris, Beijing, Shanghai, San Francisco, Miami, Dubai, Nairobi, Manila, and Hong Kong!

Context of the role: Thunes is looking for a talented Senior Regulatory Legal Counsel with a strong payments regulatory background to join our team. The Senior Regulatory Legal Counsel will be expected to advise on payments licensing and regulatory matters and interact with payment regulators.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Advise on all regulatory issues associated with Thunes.
  2. Partner closely with sales, product, treasury, tech, and marketing teams in relation to the development of existing and/or new payments products/services, including reviewing fund and information flows and product documentation, to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  3. Collaborate within the legal and compliance teams to ensure applicable contract templates and compliance processes meet regulatory requirements.
  4. Assist with communication with regulators globally.
  5. Keep up-to-date with regulatory developments in the financial services space and provide periodic updates to senior management and key business functions on such developments.
  6. Manage and liaise with external counsels on legal, licensing, and regulatory matters.
  7. Represent Thunes in local and international gatherings of financial regulators where required.

What we are looking for:

  1. Qualified to practice law ideally in the UK and/or France, with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant post-qualification experience (either in-house in the fintech/payments industry or international law firm).
  2. Global exposure in the payments space and experience in supporting licensed payment entities.
  3. Deep knowledge of payments regulations in multiple jurisdictions (e.g., compliance and AML rules, money transmission, safeguarding, and regulatory reporting requirements).
  4. Understanding of payments products and legal principles pertaining to the payments ecosystem, regulatory and licensing strategy, and horizon scanning of new markets.
  5. Comfortable with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment and able to offer creative and practical solutions to overcome licensing and regulatory hurdles.
  6. Ability to project manage and deliver on multiple high-priority projects concurrently, and capable of exercising independent judgment on governance, risk, regulatory and legal matters.
  7. Proactive, self-motivated team player who always strives for better ways of doing things, without settling for the status quo.
  8. Strong command of English (spoken and written).
