AGENCY SUMMARY :

Women’s Habitat of Etobicoke (WHE) is a feminist, multi-service, community-based organization in South Etobicoke, serving all women and their dependents experiencing violence and poverty since 1978. In 2006, WHE opened an outreach centre to respond to the increasing needs for services for victims and survivors of domestic violence.

WHE offers transformational services and programs in two distinct locations to address the impact of violence and poverty on women and their dependents which includes safety audits, safety planning, trauma-informed crisis and ongoing counseling services, housing support services, advocacy and referrals to settlement and community resources, as well as skills and capacity building for promoting healthy relationships and prevention of gender-based violence.

JOB SUMMARY :

This position is for a male counselor who will use a feminist based, trauma-informed, anti-racist / anti-oppression and harm reduction lens in all aspects of engagement with boys and young men, including intake, assessment, goal planning and case management. The YMTC offers strengths-based, trauma-informed individual and group counseling aimed at supporting male youth develop coping skills and building resilience.

The YMTC creates and promotes a safe environment where male youth between the ages of 12 and 21 engage in conversations about gender and social norms. The YMTC also participates on relevant committees and advocacy groups.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Trauma Informed Intake and Assessment

Perform needs assessment of clients with sensitivity, empathy, and cultural competence, and involve the youth and their family members as active participants in their support when appropriate.

  1. Conduct comprehensive clinical assessment for youth exposed to domestic violence using a multifaceted approach that considers the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of the client.
  2. Risk Assessment & Safety Planning

Identify immediate or long-term risks to the youth's safety and any other family members well-being, including risks of further exposure to violence, substance abuse, or involvement in unsafe behavior.

  1. Develop a documented safety plan with clear strategies to mitigate risk factors.
  2. Evaluate the extent of trauma experienced by the youth due to exposure to domestic violence.
  3. Developmental Assessment

Consider the developmental stage of the youth and how exposure to domestic violence may have impacted their developmental trajectory.

  1. Assess for any developmental delays or disruptions.
  2. Psychosocial Assessment

Explore the youth's social support system, including relationships with family members, peers, and other caregivers.

  1. Identify protective factors or sources of resilience.
  2. Behavioral Assessment

Evaluate the youth's behavioral responses to stress and trauma, including any maladaptive coping mechanisms or problematic behaviors that may have developed as a result of exposure to domestic violence.

  1. Family Assessment

Assess the dynamics within the family system, including patterns of communication, conflict resolution, and power dynamics.

  1. Identify family strengths or challenges that may impact the youth's well-being.
  2. Cultural Assessment

Consider the cultural background and beliefs of the youth and their family, as well as how cultural factors may influence their experience of and response to domestic violence.

  1. Gather information from other sources, such as teachers, healthcare providers, or social workers, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the youth's situation and needs.
  2. Trauma-Informed Goal Planning and Case Management

Develop a tailored plan based on the findings of the assessment, incorporating evidence-based interventions to address the youth's specific needs and goals.

  1. Collaborate with the youth and when appropriate their caregiver to develop goal plans and case management activities.
  2. Provide trauma-informed crisis and ongoing individual counselling according to our Length of Service policy.
  3. Use harm reduction principles to support youth to develop / strengthen healthy coping strategies.
  4. Address the impact of systemic barriers on the youth’s emotional health.
  5. Seek ongoing feedback from the youth to ensure needs are being met and goal plans remain relevant.
  6. Assist youth and when appropriate their caregiver to develop awareness of external referral options assist with accessing internal / external resources / referrals as needed.
  7. Assist clients to research, locate and utilize community resources as appropriate.
  8. Provide initial check-ins with the client and monthly check-ins depending on the needs of the client.
  9. Track case management and evaluate progress under Sustainable Livelihoods model.
  10. Collaborate with colleagues to refer youth to other counselors, support workers or other organizations as additional needs are identified (housing, immigration, education, employment, etc.).
  11. Monitoring and Follow-Up

Regularly monitor the youth's progress in case management and reassess their needs as necessary.

  1. Provide ongoing support and follow-up to ensure their safety and well-being over time.
  2. Group Programming

Develop Logic Models and other assessment tools to design group programming for the youth to explore and de-construct gender normative behaviors and values that promote unhealthy versions of masculinity and gender-based violence.

  1. Facilitate group programming where youth build brotherhood, share their perspectives on healthy masculinity and relationships while building confidence and supporting the development of coping, leadership, life and critical skills.
  2. Facilitate March Break and summer camps as well as after-school group workshops (4-5 in person group sessions annually) such as healthy relationships, building self-esteem, self-advocacy, awareness of rights / options / choices, accessing services, developing a road map to a sustainable livelihood and independence, etc.
  3. Community Engagement and Advocacy

Act as an advocate when necessary, including accompanying youth to service appointments such as court, social assistance offices, etc.

  1. Act as a resource for groups and individuals from the community requesting information or assistance in the area of gender-based violence.
  2. Participate in speaking engagements on the topic of youth related issues, gender-based violence and the services provided by WHE.
  3. Represent WHE in the community on task forces and on working groups, as assigned by the Community Programs and Services Manager, the Executive Director or designate.
  4. Represent WHE in all communications with youth, other community services and the general public that aligns with our mission, vision and values.
  5. Participate in community meetings and events, as well as training and workshops where applicable.
  6. Administration and Planning

Set program goals and objectives in conjunction with the Community Programs and Services Manager.

  1. Develop and maintains the program and its components i.e. individual counseling and support, group sessions, referrals, advocacy, workshops and community support.
  2. Maintain up-to-date selection of resource materials.
  3. Attend staff meetings and case management meetings as scheduled.
  4. Participate in supervision, staff and case management meetings as scheduled.
  5. Responsible for the supervision of students and volunteers when necessary.
  6. Complete an annual self-evaluation form as part of the organizational performance management process.
  7. Responsible for other duties as assigned.
  8. Data Collection, Reporting and Evaluation

Document and collect data and maintain an up to date record keeping, per WHE documentation policies, that includes each stage of engagement including but not limited to : intake and assessment results, safety plans, risk audits, client histories, goal plans, counseling notes, case management, discharge information and client outcomes, type of service delivered and hours involved, program and service evaluation and client feedback / satisfaction, and any other information stipulated by WHE and program funders (socio-demographic).

  1. Conduct pre- and post- programming evaluation using qualitative and quantitative methods to measure the effectiveness and impact of our services throughout each stage of engagement (intake / assessment, goal planning, case management, discharge), client outcomes and overall client satisfaction.
  2. Conduct annual evaluation to assess overall program outcomes and measure against annual targets.
  3. Report on program progress to the Community Programs and Services Manager including quarterly reports outlining outcomes for clients and their dependents.

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS :

  1. A Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Psychology or Child and Youth Worker from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  2. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in trauma-informed crisis counselling, including group work.
  3. Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act Ontario, Child Protection Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, etc.
  4. In depth knowledge of the issues of gender-based violence and the impacts on children and youth.
  5. Extensive knowledge of community resources, including resources for individuals with precarious immigration status, relevant legislation and social justice issues.
  6. A critical understanding of trauma-informed, harm reduction, feminist, anti oppression, anti- racist principles and frameworks and the demonstrated ability to incorporate them in all aspects of their work.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and application of the intersections of violence, trauma, mental health and addiction.
  8. Knowledge of and application the intersections of colonialism, oppression and marginalization and experiences of trauma.
  9. Awareness of and analysis of the intersection between sexism, hyper masculinity and gender-based violence.
  10. Ability to problem solve and manage crises effectively to support safety of clients and colleagues and promote overall health and safety.
  11. Ability to respect and promote an inclusive work environment to uphold the Culture of Wellness.
  12. Ability to perform harm reduction supports are required for this position and may include but are not limited to : administration of Naloxone.
  13. Ability to maintain professional boundaries at all times.
  14. Ability to work equitably and collaboratively with cultural, racial, economic and socially diverse communities.
  15. Ability to work evenings.
  16. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  17. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  18. A trauma certificate is an asset.
  19. First Aid CPR / AED certification is required.
  20. Valid Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

Women’s Habitat is unionized through CUPE Local 3877 and this position is within the bargaining unit.

Hourly Wage : Starting at $25.48 / hr, increasing to $26.24 / hr effective May 1, 2025, increasing to $27.35 / hr after completion of the probationary period. Benefits available after completion of the probationary period.
