Wind Turbine Technician II - Renewable Energy Company (Remote Site - Amherst, Nova Scotia)

With minimal supervision from higher-level technical and/or management staff, the technician utilizes skills and training to perform maintenance and/or installation work on assigned wind turbines at an intermediate level. The Wind Turbine Technician will follow defined schedules and procedures including safety protocol, turbine service and/or installation processes, and other verbal and written instructions, and may make the initial diagnosis of more basic or routine turbine issues. The Wind Turbine Technician is regarded as an "intermediate level" team member on the technician team, which may provide mentorship to entry-level technicians.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in the infrastructure sector, particularly in renewable energy projects. This is a temporary position with the potential to become permanent based on performance and availability of a role. The ideal candidate will have relevant work experience in the electrical technical field, combined with good interpersonal/teamwork, organizational, and communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Most importantly, they would need to have good physical mobility, as well as be able to lift heavy objects and handle production pressures calmly.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working with hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and/or composite skills OR in the absence of experience, a certificate of completion from an accepted Wind Technician program of equivalent scope with demonstrated field experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate basic industrial safety practices/protocols including LOTO and adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Experience using basic power and hydraulic tools.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to obtain a Passport.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions with precise execution.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to effectively collaborate with employees at all professional levels, and ability to respectfully follow supervision.
  • Basic computer operation skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand basic drawings and schematics.
  • Strong field of vision including visual depth perception and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Able to work in demanding physical and inclement weather conditions.
  • Comfort working remotely in a Turbine as part of a team with limited supervisory interaction.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as a safety role model, encourages and recognizes others completing safe acts, and intervenes when unsafe acts are being practiced. Adheres to all safety standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrates and promotes integrity, strong initiative, as well as a no-compromise focus on safety and quality of work on a continuous basis.
  • May assist with or perform basic quality audits of less experienced staff.
  • Performs intermediate-level wind turbine maintenance and/or installation tasks as assigned.
  • Effectively gathers information regarding turbine performance/issues. May diagnose, recommend, and implement solutions up to intermediate routine issues.
  • Independently initiates and performs most work tasks as well as follows defined instructions and maintenance schedules.
  • Effectively promotes a strong team environment through assisting teammates in accomplishing goals.
  • Proactively looks for improvement opportunities to job-appropriate processes and procedures.
  • This role will require travel, and working overtime, including working a flexible and variable work schedule as needed to meet business objectives.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to read, comprehend and write in English.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders 60-125 meters in height.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, carry items up to 50 lbs in weight.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, and bend for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to grip and manually manipulate, often with repetitive motion, items such as hand tools, turbine parts.
  • Ability to successfully participate in all training courses, including high-angle rescue and training.
  • Periodic walking on both flat and uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to hear and use close range radios.
  • Able to work in demanding physical and inclement weather conditions.
  • Comfort working remotely with limited supervisory interaction.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working conditions will vary depending on the type of work being performed and will involve both indoor and outdoor tasks and may require working in adverse weather conditions as long as it is safe to do so. From time to time extended hours as well as late evenings, early mornings, weekends and holiday work will be required. Worker will be required to work at heights and in an environment that may have exposure to electrical, rotational, fluid pressure and associated hazards.
