Responsible for the day-to-day motivation of crew members in the safe and effective performance of their duties. The weekend maintenance supervisor will initiate activities to promote this safe and effective performance. Using good management skills, the supervisor will assess the crew’s stability to complete the requested workload. The supervisor will lead by example, starting at the beginning of the workday and being available to assist technicians throughout the day. Recommendations for the use of contractor personnel will be made to the Superintendent, and the supervisor may direct contractor personnel when they are in the mill.
The weekend supervisor will take a secondary role in the planning and scheduling of work for the crew. He will make recommendations to the planner for job sequencing and details. The supervisor is responsible for the acquisition of materials for emergency jobs only. While determining the craft/skill/crew for the job, the supervisor does not decide the craft manpower required, as this has already been established by the planner. The supervisor will match skill levels across several crafts and send them to the job. Feedback regarding planning and scheduling will be provided to the planner for improvement.
The supervisor will lead the identification of failures or repetitive breakdowns. He will be responsible for identifying solutions to problems within his expertise (those not requiring major engineering changes). The supervisor will involve his crew in developing these solutions and provide feedback to the planner via the work order system for implementation. Feedback related to the cause of failure can help adjust the preventive/predictive maintenance program and provide valuable insights to engineering on design flaws.
