POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking a full-time content editor, focused on weekend coverage, to join the Programming team. This team’s mission is to ensure readers find The Globe’s journalism at a time, in a place and in a format that they want it in. Anticipating and listening to the audience’s needs as well as experimentation are core to what we do.
We are looking for an adaptable editor with strong news judgment who is able to make smart decisions across all platforms, including our website, app, newsletters, push alerts, and newspaper.
This position will work in collaboration with senior editors across the newsroom, as well as the wider programming, editing, audience, and visuals teams, to help determine which stories we should be prioritizing each day and how story promotion should change on weekends versus weekdays. Your decisions in this role will be guided by gut instinct as well as a deep familiarity with which stories and topics resonate with subscribers. Knowing how to turn audience analytics into actionable insights is key.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Determining stories that will appear at the top of our website and app
  • Editing and co-ordinating breaking news stories
  • Writing SEO-friendly and engaging headlines
  • Curating and writing newsletters
  • Using audience data to spot opportunities and inform programming decisions
  • Suggesting stories we should be covering
  • Looking for opportunities to experiment
  • Evening and weekend shifts will be required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least three years experience working in digital media
  • Strong news judgment
  • Strong headline and editing skills

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment where every day is an opportunity to learn or try something new, this role is for you.

This position requires evening and weekend hours. It will be based in our Toronto office and you will be required to come into the office a minimum of two days a week.

SALARY: This position is classified as a Content Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.

WE OFFER:

  • Competitive compensation to ensure we hire, retain and reward team members
  • Hybrid work environment that promotes work-life balance
  • Generous vacation and flexible work arrangements
  • Parental leave top-up
  • Competitive health and dental benefits
  • Annual wellness subsidy
  • On-site chiropractor and registered massage therapist
  • Employee and family assistance program
  • Free digital subscription to globeandmail.com and 40% off other Globe products
  • Education assistance for external training courses
