The Calgary SCOPE Society is a non-profit agency improving lives for persons with developmental disabilities in Calgary and area for over 30 years. SCOPE works with children, adults, seniors and families as respected, contributing members of Calgary’s communities.

This position is at Ridgestone Lodge, our facility in Diamond Valley (formerly called Black Diamond). This is not a position in Calgary and may be a 45+ minute drive from parts of the city.

Mission: The Calgary SCOPE Society works in alliance with people with disabilities, their families and friends, and other community members to understand problems and create solutions to personal and social justice issues.

Position: Calgary SCOPE Society is seeking Community Support Workers with geriatric and/or mental health/complex needs experience to provide support to older adults (55+) with developmental disabilities and accompanying mental health and aging concerns to work primarily weekends. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are required for this position.

Hours of work:

We are currently looking primarily for availability for weekend shifts:

  • 9 AM to 3 PM
  • 3 PM to 9 PM
  • 9 PM to 9 AM

Requirements:

Direct client support

  • Assisting and teaching daily living skills, working side by side with clients, as they are able to accomplish daily living tasks (i.e., managing monies, hygiene, household chores).
  • Support clients to have a meaningful day (i.e. helping clients figure out what they would like their days to look like and support them to volunteer, find a job, find community activities, attend fitness classes, take courses, meet with friends and family, etc.).

Promotion of health and well being

  • Helping clients to take their medications.
  • Promoting healthy living through encouraging proper eating habits and exercise routines.
  • Monitoring mental and physical health through regular health care appointments.

Advocacy

  • Supporting and encouraging clients to advocate for themselves and when necessary, advocating on their behalf.

Relationship Building

  • Encourage and support clients to have positive, respectful relationships with their families, roommates, staff members, and the community at large.

Administrative responsibilities

  • Timely completion of detailed and thorough paperwork to the Journeys coordination team according to provided schedule expectations.
  • Attending team meetings, client specific training, team days, and other necessary meetings as directed by the Journeys coordination team.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field along with 1 - 2 years of experience working with adults with developmental disabilities who have a dual diagnosis (an accompanying mental health diagnosis) or an equivalent combination is preferred.
  • Experience working with older adults/seniors, mental health diagnoses or complex needs an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team environment. Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to establish collaborative and effective relationships with others are required for this position.
  • Training in First Aid and CPR, CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training), and Vecova Medication Administration is an asset.
  • Must be physically capable of managing lifts and transfers of clients.
