Role Overview:

Are you passionate about breaking news and enterprise storytelling with a keen interest in uncovering issues that matter to our audience? CBC Manitoba is looking for an experienced, dynamic and creative digital journalist who can make a positive contribution to our newsroom and to our work.

An exceptional journalist and a self-starter, you must be able to understand a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom. You know how to write, edit and package digital stories.

You’re innovative and will try new workflows and new story treatments. You understand the diverse and changing population in Manitoba and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

In this role, you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

This is a full-time one-year role based in Winnipeg.

Your Responsibilities:

  1. Pitch, research, write and produce original story ideas for digital audiences on cbc.ca/manitoba.
  2. Repurpose content from other CBC platforms, including writing, packaging stories with strong headlines, photos, video, audio and graphics using the latest information.
  3. Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  4. Distil large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  5. Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts to deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  6. Schedule and write copy for social media platforms as well as moderate livestreams.

Your Profile:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a news and breaking news environment.
  • Strong understanding of online news, including social media, video, graphics and photo selection.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue creative story ideas.
  • Storyteller with close connections to the diversity of Winnipeg and Manitoba including deep knowledge of Indigenous communities.
  • A desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Ability to forge positive team relationships and keen to work on a team that values collaboration and transparency.
  • Digital video shooting and editing skills are a bonus.
  • Sound news judgment, attention to detail and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A passion for learning new tools and journalism forms plus an interest in innovating.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company, other classes considered an asset.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work a variety of shifts including early starts, late finishes and weekends.
