Your Opportunity

An opportunity exists within Stantec’s Community Development Team for an experienced Water Resources Engineer. The position will be based out of the Markham, Mississauga, or Toronto office, but may require travel to other regional Stantec offices.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake detailed studies, modeling and design tasks associated with surface water works in support of a wide variety of projects in both the private and public sectors. Assignments will include stormwater management for a variety of development projects, Subwatershed Plans/Master Drainage Studies, floodplain delineation/management analyses, highway drainage design, erosion control studies, etc.;
  • Guide the water resources task of projects through to completion, from due diligence/feasibility work, preliminary/conceptual design, through to detailed design, scheduling, tendering, construction, and certification and ensure that the water resources work meets applicable specifications and regulations;
  • With support from senior staff, serve as a technical expert during liaison with clients, municipal/agency staff, and other stakeholders;
  • Oversee pre-construction, during construction and post-construction monitoring including adherence to health and safety protocols, scheduling and coordination of field work, and associated reporting. Some travel may be required;
  • Writing/reviewing reports and design briefs to document analyses;
  • Task delegation to junior staff members and coordination of technical work with other disciplines (e.g. civil engineers, hydrogeological engineers, landscape architects, etc.) in support of linear infrastructure and land development work;
  • Mentorship of junior staff across a range of technical and professional development levels;

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others both verbally and in written documentation such as emails, memos and technical reports;
  • A thorough understanding of stormwater analysis and design obtained through related experience;
  • A solid background in the preparation of stormwater management plans and reports, master and/or phased master drainage plans, and functional servicing plans are considered assets.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario’s stormwater guidelines and regulations and familiarity with the linear infrastructure design and/or land development/redevelopment process;
  • Understanding of water resources, environmental and/or civil engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others including the ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought;
  • Understanding of the interplay between design, permitting and construction. Construction inspection and/or construction administration experience is considered to be an asset;
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, standards, and other similar material;
  • Strong problem solving skills;
  • Hands on experience with stormwater management modelling, ideally Visual OTTHYMO, HEC-RAS, and PCSWMM. Knowledge of SWMHYMO, InfoWorks, GAWSER, or other models considered an asset. Experience with software such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD (Civil3D) is preferred. Requires proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering (or similar) and registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) – those without registration as a P.Eng. with PEO should be eligible to receive a P.Eng. designation with PEO within a year.
  • Minimum of 5 years of stormwater management engineering experience with a preference for 7 years.

Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
