Job description

Are you passionate about waste reduction and want to bring others along on Edmonton’s journey towards a zero waste future?

Help bring the City’s 25-year waste strategy to life by educating Edmontonians about the three-stream waste sorting program for residents with the curbside collection program. Reporting to the Outreach Coordinator, you will be part of a small team of Waste Outreach Educators having educational conversations on residents’ doorsteps. This role works almost exclusively in the afternoons, evenings, and occasionally on weekends.

What will you do?

  • Represent the City in a positive, diplomatic and professional way
  • Engage residents at their door and provide them with program information and education materials related to proper waste sorting
  • Engage residents in conversations about food scraps and recycling sorting
  • Empower residents to be successful participants, share program information and answer questions
  • Use data mapping software to record statistical information
  • Perform physical tasks on foot, such as walking stairs and transporting program supplies
  • Closely follow safety procedures and practice self-care skills while working independently in the field
  • Provide advice/recommendations, identify possible improvements regarding educational direction and daily procedures of the Waste Outreach Team
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of the first year of a recognized Recreation Administration or related diploma or degree program
  • One (1) year direct experience leading recreational, cultural or related educational programs

Skills Required for Success:

  • Experience working with the general public, either in an educational or customer service setting
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to citizens, including comfort with door-to-door canvassing and passion for speaking with the general public and educating them on various City initiatives
  • Skilled in presenting, organizing and supervising group presentations
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships that reflect a respectful and inclusive style
  • Ability to take direction and work independently to meet desired outcomes
  • Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities
  • Skill in the use of Google Workspace (Forms, Docs, Gmail)
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies
  • Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Staff will regularly be walking and standing for extended periods of time (outdoors) in various weather and environmental conditions, bending and lifting up to 25 lbs (such as boxes of promotional material), walking up and down numerous flights of stairs, and at times work near active roadways (including alleys and back streets)
  • Successful candidates must be available to work 7.5 hr shifts between 10 am and 8:30 pm, Monday-Saturday (5 shifts a week)
  • Some weekend work will be required. Position may be weather dependent
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 10 temporary part-time positions up to 6 months.

Hours of Work: Up to 39 hours per week. Monday - Friday.

Salary: $21.906 - $27.069 (Hourly).
