Specific Competencies:
- Ability to demonstrate mastery of all routine technician skills to deliver the following professional services safely and effectively: diagnostics (laboratory, imaging, sample collection), anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, nursing care, drug administration and dispensing, client education
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as patient records, vaccine histories, medical labels, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Calmly and safely restrain pets who may struggle, scratch or try to bite using low-stress techniques.
- Ability to be an advocate for the best interests of our clients and patients.
- Operate and maintain anesthetic machines with closed- and open-circuit anesthetic systems
- Administer injectable and gas anesthesia according to standard practice protocols. Monitor and maintain anesthetized patients by observation/manual parameters and by use of vital signs equipment
- Knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures and ability to anticipate what supplies and equipment are needed for surgical set-up
- Perform post-operative client update calls upon patient recovery
- Knowledge of commonly used analgesics and resuscitative medications to properly calculate emergency medication volumes
- Perform routine dental scaling, polishing, fluoride application, and dental charting
- Knowledge of fluid therapies and properly calculate volumes and rates. Perform venipuncture and place IV catheters and administer IV fluids using an IV pump according to the veterinarian’s orders
- Properly calculate medication volumes and administer injectable, topical and oral medications to patient
- Perform common outpatient procedures (i.e. nail trims, ear cleanings, anal gland expression, etc.).
- Be able to recognize signs and degrees of pain and discomfort. Understand the medications and methods used to control pain and advocate on the patient’s behalf.
- Perform emergency procedures including shock assessment and initiation of treatment according to hospital protocols
- Assist with humane euthanasia as requested
- Must be able to make independent, common-sense decisions and to observe abnormal behaviors and physical problems in patients in order to alert the veterinarian to significant changes
- Ability to graciously deal with client complaints, billing questions and to successfully communicate with diverse personality types

Education and Licensure Requirements:
- Must have competency in the skills required for veterinary technician licensure
Follow federal and provincial animal health laws and regulations including OSHA.
Reporting:
- The VT works under the direct guidance and supervision of the veterinarians
Directly reports to the Practice Manager.
