Your Contribution to NRSI

NRSI is looking for a qualified individual with experience in plant identification and vegetation surveys. The successful applicant will be based out of our Calgary, Alberta office and will be expected to regularly contribute to both field- and office-based tasks. Field surveys will be completed primarily throughout Alberta, but may also include travel to Saskatchewan or other provinces. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:

  1. Assisting with vegetation inventories and participating in other surveys, as required.
  2. Maintaining regular communication about the assigned field work with project managers, fellow field personnel, and clients as necessary.
  3. Data management and quality assurance.
  4. Assistance with report preparation.
  5. Occasional assistance with other field- or office-related tasks.

Your Education:

  • A degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences. Similar educational experience will also be considered.

Key Job Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license and over 18 years old in order to drive a rental vehicle.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Willing and able to travel for multi-day field surveys, sometimes in remote locations, under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, for long hours, and occasionally on holidays or weekends.
  • Physically fit, as some field work for this position will be physically demanding.
  • Experience in the identification of common plant species in Alberta, including weed species.
  • Proficiency with simple navigation, experience using handheld GPS units.
  • A good work ethic and positive attitude, dependability, flexibility, and excellent communication.
  • Ability to work independently on a regular basis.
  • Able to reliably commute on a daily basis to the work location.
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including the maintenance of well-organized and detailed field notes.
  • A commitment to continual improvement of technical abilities.

Assets:

  • Experience with wetland classification and delineation.
  • Experience with reclamation and/or invasive species management.
  • Experience with more challenging families of vascular plants, such as Cyperaceae, Juncaceae, and Poaceae.
  • Experience with various wildlife surveys (e.g., herpetofauna, birds, or mammals).
  • A reliable personal vehicle insured for work purposes (authorized mileage will be reimbursed).

Salary: $23.00-$28.00 per hour commensurate on experience.

Estimated number of hours per week, including authorized travel: 40 hours.
