Utility Operator (404N6)

The City of Lethbridge Water and Wastewater Operations Department is accepting applications for a permanent Water and Wastewater Utility Operator (404N6).

The successful candidate will be required to perform a variety of tasks such as manhole and catch basin installation and repair, pipe installation, frost hog set up as well as other related duties. The successful candidate will work in a variety of situations, under minimal supervision, using a broad skill set to complete tasks.

WAGE: $33.98

PRIMARY DUTIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for completing inspections, maintenance and repairs of water and wastewater infrastructure. This position will take the lead on training and of staff for small tools and equipment used within the department. This role will work to ensure that tools and equipment owned by the department are kept in good working order.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  1. Deliver outstanding service to our customers as the primary representative of the City in the field.
  2. Replacement and repair of catch basins, curbstands, laterals, manhole channels, valve caps, bumper posts, fences and manhole lid apparatus.
  3. Performing condition assessments of W&WW infrastructure including manholes, catch basins, storm laterals and storm outfalls.
  4. Safe operation of “hot-tapping” equipment, large hydraulic saws, hand tampers, grinders, saw-cutting apparatus.
  5. Closing roads, placing barricades and signage, delivery and set-up of “Frost-Hogs.”
  6. Enter confined spaces to complete the required inspections.
  7. Read maps, plan and surveyor grades.
  8. Operate GIS and work order management system (Cityworks).

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  1. Completion of a high school diploma.
  2. Level II AWWOA Certification in both Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems.
  3. A valid class 5 drivers licence with Q endorsement is required as well as other safety training including confined space certifications.
  4. Strong working knowledge of wastewater collection and water distribution systems including all operation and maintenance procedures utilized within the department.
  5. Excellent problem solving skills.
  6. Strong time management skills.
  7. Ability to identify potential hazards and take proper steps to mitigate anything that has been identified.
  8. The ability to be innovative while performing utility work.
  9. Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  10. A team player who is flexible, helpful and friendly in all interactions.
  11. Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting various issues that arise.
  12. Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
