Undergraduate Nurse, Infection Prevention & Control

We are seeking an Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) to join our Infection Prevention & Control team within the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, providing a valuable developmental opportunity by offering mentorship and role modeling in IPC practices. This student will gain experience in applying best practices for infection prevention, analyzing data to support quality improvement, and collaborating with community health agencies and stakeholders. This position involves critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and address healthcare-associated infections and trends, ensuring patient safety across various settings and populations. This role fosters growth in leadership, collaboration, and public health. As a UNE, you will be expected to demonstrate a strong foundation in nursing knowledge and practice, with the ability to effectively communicate and contribute to team efforts. You will take responsibility for your ongoing professional development, engaging in education, orientation, and quality improvement activities to ensure continuous growth and competence in your role. This role requires the application of nursing standards and protocols to provide safe and effective care. You will work under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals, offering patient-centered care within the scope of your education and competencies, and seek guidance as needed to enhance your skills. To succeed in this role, you must possess strong interpersonal and organizational abilities, adapt quickly to changing environments, and prioritize effectively. Familiarity with computer systems, specifically Connect Care, will also be essential to ensure seamless delivery of care and service. The successful candidate will be expected to have full-time availability throughout the summer, maximizing the learning experience during this time.

Description:

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) is an unregulated member of the nursing team, who functions within the broader interdisciplinary health care team to provide patient-centered care under the consultation, guidance, and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) or other regulated healthcare designate. The UNE is accountable for providing safe nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with their formal nursing education preparation and competency and articulating relevant information related to the clients’ health status, self-care abilities, and limitations to the RN or other regulated healthcare designate. This includes conducting holistic nursing assessments to collect comprehensive information on client health status. Contributing to the development and modification of the individualized care plans, implementing therapeutic nursing interventions, and evaluating the plan of care to achieve desired outcomes. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Must be currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program (RN or RPN). Must have a current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certification. Completed 3rd year of an RN program, or in the final year of an after-degree RN program; or Completed 2nd year of an RPN program. Minimum 600 hours of clinical practice within the approved program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, dated within six (6) months prior to start date, is required. Resume must include details of clinical hours completed and/or expected to be completed by the start date, as well as the current year and term of study.

Preferred Qualifications:

Full-time commitment throughout the summer. Please include a paragraph in your cover letter/resume detailing your availability, along with a summary of why you are interested in IPC. Experience in Acute Care sector an asset. Experience as an Infection Control Designate or Hand Hygiene auditor an asset.
