Job description

Education: Other trades certificate or diploma

Experience: 2 years to less than 3 years

Tasks:

  1. Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions
  2. Professionalism in customer service
  3. Load and unload goods
  4. Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment
  5. Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection and oversee all aspects of vehicle
  6. Receive and relay information to central dispatch
  7. Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption
  8. Transport and handle dangerous goods

Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses:

  1. Driver's License (Class 1 or A)
  2. Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certificate
  3. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate

Documentation knowledge:

  1. Bill of lading
  2. Dangerous goods occurrence reports
  3. Inspection report (pre-trip, en-route, post-trip)

Type of trucking and equipment:

  1. Tractor-trailer
  2. Trip recorder (on-board computer)

Transportation / travel experience:

  1. Local

Security and safety:

  1. Criminal record check
  2. Driving record check (abstract)

Transportation / travel information:

  1. Valid driver's licence

Work conditions and physical capabilities:

  1. Overtime required
  2. Physically demanding
