The City of Victoria is seeking a Transportation Coordinator to lead the review of transportation-related components of building permits and support the evaluation of transportation development applications.


As a key member of our Transportation Planning team, our successful candidate will ensure street frontage improvements triggered by development projects comply with municipal and provincial guidelines, bylaws, and regulations.


We are looking for a solution-oriented professional with strong written and verbal communication skills who can effectively collaborate with internal teams, developers, and stakeholders. The successful candidate will support the development of transportation policies, processes, and programs, and evaluate detailed transportation designs of complex development frontages. They will also review development application procedures, coordinate and run building permit meetings, and liaise with staff from other divisions to ensure priority applications meet established timelines.

WORK FROM HOME

The successful candidate for this posting may be eligible for participation in a hybrid, work from home arrangement in alignment with the City’s Work from Home Policy. Such arrangements are determined with each employee and subject to change based on operational needs and policy direction.


FLEX

The successful candidate for this vacancy would participate in a modified work week, earning a flex day off each bi-weekly period by working additional time each day. Modified work weeks established in accordance with the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement and are subject to change.


POSITION FUNCTION

Manage and implement transportation engineering and planning programs, improvements, and initiatives.


KEY DUTIES
  • Coordinate and direct transportation engineering and planning programs, improvements, and initiatives.
  • Provide input and support to transportation infrastructure designs and private development frontage requirements.
  • Provide technical analysis and assessment of transportation engineering and planning programs and initiatives.
  • Support the development of departmental transportation management programs and assist in implementation. Evaluate transportation issues, complete analysis, concept plans and cost estimates.
  • Research and prepare briefing notes, discussion documents, presentations and draft policies and standards with an ability to assess, interpret benefits and risks and make recommendations.
  • Represent the department in an advisory, liaison and resources capacity to consultants, advisory groups, government agencies and community representatives and respond to enquiries from the public, outside agencies and other departments in person, by phone, and in writing.
  • Liaise with and provide policy, design and technical information and advice on transportation issues to staff, consultants, and outside agencies.
  • Collaboration with internal and external teams and stakeholders in project planning, design, scope and quality and report regularly on project and program status, risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Co-ordinate, assign, review and participate in the work of approximately 1 FTE as part of an annual program. Make recommendations on employee selection, and development; provide training and input to performance appraisals.
  • Perform related duties where required.

INDEPENDENCE
  • Work is generated by the departmental work program but also impacted by community issues and requests from Council and the public.
  • Work is reviewed through discussions with supervisor and team manager and at Section and Division meetings.
  • New initiatives, major projects, overall work priorities, objectives and schedules are discussed with supervisor and team manager with recommendations.

  • Establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships.
  • Working level operation of current word processing, spreadsheet, and related engineering software.
  • Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records.

Qualifications
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
  • University Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or Urban Planning or related field (4 years).
  • Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

Experience
  • 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other
  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
