The Tissue Culture Specialist is responsible for developing, testing and implementing tissue culture laboratory practices. Responsibilities include preparing plant media, cutting and transferring plants to fresh medium, multiplication, employing sterile technique, capturing data for research and production-related activities, and other lab maintenance duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Independently manage operations in the Tissue Culture Laboratory with the primary goal of consistently producing high-quality in vitro plants
- Develop, write and strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all laboratory activities
- Commission laboratory equipment and ensure preventive and corrective maintenance are performed
- Efficiently manipulate plants using delicate hand tools and aseptic technique
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and hygiene by sterilizing equipment, tools and maintaining facilities
- Continuously test and trial best practices for working with different cannabis cultivars, with a focus on optimal health and multiplication of plants as required
- Interpret experimental results, troubleshoot technical issues, and optimize lab processes
- Prepare plant tissue culture media, including stock solutions, and manage reagent and chemical inventories
- Maintain accurate records of chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Monitor for pest and disease within the lab environment and take preventive actions when needed
- Operate equipment including laminar flow hood, autoclave, plant growth chamber, and other laboratory machinery as needed
- Manage and track plant material inventory, including processing, documentation and quality control of in vitro plant production
- Utilize Good Documentation Practices (GDP) to accurately record data and maintain controlled documentation
- Ensure sanitation and maintenance of laboratory and equipment are performed regularly
- Schedule and perform preventive and corrective maintenance on laboratory equipment as needed
- Work with Quality Assurance and management to ensure compliance with the Health Canada Cannabis Act in all laboratory operations
- Other duties as assigned, ensuring flexibility to adapt to dynamic priorities
Qualifications and Expectations:
- Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in biological sciences, or a related field is required
- Knowledge and practical experience in Quality Control/Assurance and GDP procedures are essential
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and proficiency in managing data and laboratory processes
- Previous experience working with, and commissioning tissue culture laboratory equipment, including plant growth chambers and autoclaves, is required
- Experience working with plant tissue culture in a laboratory setting is required, ideally with cannabis or similar plant species
- Proven ability to work independently and develop, revise, and implement SOPs
- Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to lead initiatives and meet deadlines
- Proficiency with fine instruments used for plant tissue culture
- A strong team player who promotes a culture of professionalism, integrity, quality and teamwork
- Excellent English communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Valid driver’s license or reliable form of transportation
Work Conditions:
- Monday to Friday, 8 hour shifts during the day
- Overtime available as needed
- Repetitive movements & reaching while work is done under laminar flow hood
- Frequently lift a minimum of 50 lbs without assistance
