Terrestrial Environmental Field Lead– Seasonal contract
NWES is currently looking to hire an enthusiastic Environmental Field Lead to assist with the delivery of our field programs. The successful applicant will be based out of the Thunder Bay area. This position has the potential for extension past the summer field season provided the candidate is suitable and workload allows. This position has a preferred start date of May 1, 2025, but is flexible.
What can I expect to do in this role?
- Participate in fieldwork associated with ongoing field projects including:
- Species at Risk surveys
- Bird Surveys
- Vegetation and wetland surveys
- Small mammal surveys
- Ungulate track and nursery surveys
- Perform desktop tasks such as data entry and reporting.
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Minimum 1-2 seasons conducting terrestrial environmental field work.
- Demonstrated ability conducting point counts or identifying birds and amphibians by sound.
- Familiarity with common boreal forest plants, and experience conducting vegetation and soil surveys.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and manual labour, often requiring prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, squatting, and stretching.
- Demonstrated experience and comfort travelling and working in the field, including in remote locations and willingness to spend extended periods of time away.
- A desire and demonstrated ability to work independently or lead a field crew.
- Willingness to work long hours under variable field conditions (in inclement weather, heat and cold weather conditions) as well as work on weekends and/or statutory holidays.
- Up to date Standard First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.
- Possession of a small craft operators’ certificate and ATV training would be an asset.
Desirable Qualifications - Note that applicants are NOT required to meet ALL desirable qualifications. On-the-job training will be provided. All interested persons are encouraged to apply.
- Experience with Ecological Land Classification and the Ontario Wetland Evaluation System or other provincial equivalent an asset.
- Valid Class G driver’s licence.
- Experience living and/or working on the land in northern Ontario.
- Some post-secondary education in an environmental or natural resource-related field.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to work off hours, long days (bank time), with changes of routine and schedule.
Organizational and Problem-Solving Skills:
- Complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ability to make adjustments to field plans when needed and work efficiently.
- Identify and alert others to problems/issues as well as emergency or safety situations associated with fieldwork.
Communication and Computer Skills:
- You are proficient with computer programs such as regular office hardware and software, and programs such as GIS, GPS and navigation software.
- Use of field tablets and georeferencing cameras for data entry, navigation, and data management.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Interact with colleagues, and be courteous and respectful to clients.
- Experience with GPS/InReach is an asset.
Position Type: Contract
Location: Thunder Bay with travel to field sites throughout northern Ontario.
Key Requirements: A valid driver’s license, and ability to work remotely, including accommodation in field stations.
Salary: Hourly, to be negotiated based on training and experience.
