Job description

TEMPORARY CHILD AND YOUTH WORKER

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is located in Northeastern Ontario and serves approximately 6,800 students in 17 schools located in Greater Sudbury, as well as in Killarney.

Our School Board is host to and celebrates diverse cultures and is comprised of dedicated staff committed to high quality education that inspires and promotes lifelong learning. The Board is currently seeking a Temporary Child and Youth Worker to join our dynamic team.

Under the supervision of the Manager of Mental Health Services, and in collaboration with the Board mental health team and the school-based team, the Child and Youth Worker supports elementary students in the classroom or in small groups with evidence-informed and identity-affirming mental health literacy and universal mental health promotion activities. Additionally, the Child and Youth Worker will be called upon to prepare and deliver mental health teaching and coaching for school staff and parents.

Essential Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  1. Two-year diploma from an accredited college Child and Youth Worker (CYW) program.

Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  2. Knowledge of the educational, emotional, social, and recreational needs of young people and the family system.
  3. Working knowledge of the Ontario Child and Family Services Act.
  4. Working knowledge of the Education Act.
  5. Knowledge and understanding of the School Mental Health Ontario strategy a definite asset.
  6. Understand and practice in accordance with federal, provincial, and local laws, statutes and/or policies that relate to students and families, such as child protection/child abuse, special education, attendance, education rights, and privacy.
  7. Working knowledge of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) and the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
  8. Strong work ethic and the ability to provide regular attendance.
  9. Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

  2. Effective written and oral communication skills.
  3. Proven decision making, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  4. Excellent mediation and conflict resolution skills.
  5. Ability to function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  6. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with students, school staff, board personnel, parents, community agencies, and organizations.
  7. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  8. Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  9. Excellent discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  10. Ability to be reliable and consistent.
  11. Ability to develop and present training sessions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. One-year related experience as a child and youth worker in a clinical or educational setting.
  2. Good computer skills, including word processing, communications software, Internet and e-mail.
  3. Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid, and CPR are assets.
  4. Ability to read and speak French is an asset.
  5. Knowledge of Indigenous culture is an asset.

The salary for this position is $29.60 hourly.
