The Orthopaedic Technician assists in the assessment, planning and provision of care in the Children’s Outpatient Clinic in accordance with the Mission and Values of Hotel Dieu Hospital and its objectives, policies, standards and procedures.
The Orthopaedic Technician performs duties under the supervision of medical staff in the department of ophthalmology. The Orthopaedic Technician works independently within his/her scope of practice, collaborating with other members of the health care team.
The Orthopaedic Technician organizes the workload and fulfills the responsibilities of the position with a high degree of autonomy within established guidelines and procedures. Clinical direction and support are provided by the Orthopaedic surgeons within the Department.
The Orthopaedic Technician is accountable for his/her decisions and actions even when acting interdependently in consultation and collaboration with the healthcare team.
The Orthopaedic Technician advocates for and provides care to the patient undergoing treatment in the Orthopaedic Clinic/Diagnostic Areas.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
The Orthopaedic Technician will:
- Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
- Participate in the learning experience of health care students as necessary.
- Sit on committees as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative in participating in research activities.
- Demonstrate skills in computer technology including graphics, database/spreadsheet management, digital imaging and computer slide production.
- To perform orthopaedic technician duties as a member of a multidisciplinary team in the orthopaedic clinic.
- Under the guidance of Orthopaedic Surgeons and in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, the Orthopaedic Technician provides a range of orthopaedic technology services including application of casts using plaster and synthetic materials, measuring and fitting patients with braces splints and ambulatory aids in the Fracture Clinic and Urgent Care Units.
- Assist physicians with procedures such as closed reduction of fractures and minor surgical procedures.
- Understand the principles of aseptic technique.
- Remove and apply wound dressing.
- Remove sutures, staples, K-wires, pins, and external fixators.
- Maintain and upgrade skills and knowledge through continuing education and seek opportunities for knowledge dissemination.
- Document pertinent information and actions taken in the patient chart.
- Provide education to patients and family regarding wound care, cast care, and skin care.
- Order, maintain and manage orthopaedic supplies.
- Be flexible, self-directed and able to work safely and effectively with minimal supervision.
- Have knowledge of orthopaedic supplies and equipment for a variety of procedures, the positioning of patients, casts and splinting techniques.
- Demonstrate ability to properly apply, adjust and remove all common orthopaedic devices while minimizing discomfort to the patient.
- Ability to interpret simple fractures and dislocations on x-ray.
- Demonstrate ability to respond to a large and diversified workload within a fast-paced fracture clinic environment.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of a recognized Orthopaedic Technologist Diploma Program.
- Registered or in process with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologist (CSOT).
- Recent related experience.
- Proven good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Capable of coping with a mentally and physically demanding work environment.
- Able to function independently as well as interdependently.
- Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
