Job description

Title: Technical Writer - Senior
Location: Toronto, Ontario M3M 0B4 (Hybrid)
Duration: 87+250 days

Must Have:

  • Experience working in the field of occupational health and safety, with a sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, and other relevant regulations and standards, e.g., Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in order to explain complex technical information in clear language.
  • Strong experience with MS Office and MS SharePoint.
  • Certification or degree in OHS or related education and experience.

Deliverables & Skillset – Technical Writer

  • Health & Safety consultant with experience in content writing and research.
  • Previous experience as a technical writer with health and safety associations/boards/etc.
  • Previous experience writing procedural documents, policies, and/or communication content.
  • Previous experience developing comprehensive HIPAA compliance documentation.
  • Working knowledge of OHSA, OHS, and WSIB.
  • Researching experience: marketing strategy, health & safety concepts, data analytics, etc.
  • Working in an agile environment.
  • Nice to have: Joint Health & Safety Committee Certified.
  • Nice to have: Previous experience delivering health & safety training.

Business Subject Matter Knowledge and Expertise - 25%

  • Experience working in the field of occupational health and safety, with a sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, and other relevant regulations and standards, e.g., Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment and hazard assessment methodologies, including hazard identification and control.
  • Understanding of small business needs in Ontario, gained from experience.
  • Experience in developing and preparing health and safety related information content for projects, communication tools, presentations, publications, and other services.
  • Certification or degree in OHS or related education and experience.
  • Knowledge of contentious, emerging, and prevalent OHS issues.
  • Experience working with regulatory enforcement authorities (e.g., OHS inspector).
  • Experience working in accordance with acts, policies, and procedures of the public sector.

Technical Skills - 25%

  • Ability to use professional judgment, knowledge, and experience when developing safety related content.
  • Ability to ensure information is supplied from credible information sources and reconciles potentially conflicting or biased information.
  • Ability to determine the most appropriate information to be included, the level of detail, and the best approach to explain the concepts to the selected audience.
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate complex information for appropriate audiences.
  • Ability to write with the goal of communicating complex, technical information more easily.
  • Experience in the interpretation and application of relevant health and safety legislation, standards, statistical information, and guidelines.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Research & Analysis Skills - 20%

  • Ability to research, analyze, and assess technical issues in an in-depth manner using critical appraisal/analysis and clear language techniques in order to prepare, develop, and write accurate, unbiased, and comprehensive health and safety content for products and services.
  • Excellent research skills, as well as the knowledge of and the ability to choose the best starting points for searches on Internet sources.
  • Ability to develop, gather, and disseminate technical information among colleagues, internal and external partners, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify, retrieve, and evaluate scientific and technical information.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and organize credible health and safety information to formulate and prepare written responses and other technical resources.

Communication Skills - 20%

  • Excellent verbal and written skills in order to explain complex technical information in clear language.
  • Written communication is tailored to meet audience needs.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and excellent ability to work in a team environment.

Other - 10%

  • Excellent time management skills and organizational skills to handle multiple competing priorities within established deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with the volume and variety of content development work for products and services.
  • Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and methodologies such as waterfall and Agile methods with a focus on iterative development and delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct or provide guidance to team members.
