What will you be doing!

  • Developing and maintaining core competencies in environmental (Env), effluent (Eff) and groundwater (GW) monitoring.
  • Verifying data generated by internal and external sources using knowledge, trends, and statistical evaluations.
  • Ensuring that all field and laboratory written documentation relating to collecting and generating environmental monitoring data are properly documented.
  • Helping maintain and enhance all branch-specific equipment and data management systems.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a Chemical, Chemistry, or Environmental program or similar discipline.
    • Additional computer, electronic or Information Technology courses will be advantageous.
  • Experience
    • At least five (5) years of chemistry or environmental laboratory operational experience in which the laboratory performs instrumental analyses of different sample types (e.g. water, soils, sediments) to determine different parameters or characteristics of the sample under Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) requirements.
    • Experience in working with and understanding of, data and results, preferably with environmentally-related samples (environmental/effluent and/or groundwater monitoring).
    • Experience with different types of analytical instrumentation, samples and sample analyses.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing procedures, verifying field or laboratory data based on end-user requirements, and making decisions to ensure safety.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Strong knowledge of chemical laboratory practices and safety procedures, environmental monitoring field procedures, chemical analysis techniques, QA and QC requirements for sampling and analysis activities.
    • Knowledge of CRL’s Environmental Protection Programs. Strong attention to detail while being analytical, logical, and perceptive.
    • Confident in data review and meticulous in record keeping.
    • Proficient in creating schedules and setting priorities.
    • Computer skills applicable to database management, instrument automation and spreadsheet applications.
    • Ability to make sound decisions and recommendations based on scientific understanding, simulation and experimental results and observations while balancing the implications of the conclusions and recommendations.
    • Excellent communication skills with exceptional technical writing and reading skills while adept at working with people with varying skills, experience, and education.
    • Great listening and questioning attitude while articulating and convincing others of their decisions and recommendations.
    • Able to understand different types of sample collection and how data is generated, and able to provide feedback on methodical processes to achieve precise methodologies and accurate data.
    • Proficient at finding information not only within the organization and company but also external sources such as scientific journals, databases, and handbooks.
    • Skilled in performing deep dives to help understand discrepancies for reported data.
    • Performs all responsibilities safely and accurately by strictly following processes.
    • Accurately records observations in the experimental work.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Work can involve handling toxic and hazardous chemicals, flammable and explosive gases and radioactive materials.
  • When performing field work, they may be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing in all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Work generally takes place in an office and sometimes laboratory environment, subject to ambient environmental conditions.
  • Working outside in all weather conditions may be required, which may involve working at extremes of temperature. Additionally, the work may entail encounters with various wildlife, including black flies, mosquitoes, and bears.
