Position: Team Leader, Pharmacy Education.
Status: Permanent Full Time.
Department: Pharmacy Department, Mississauga Hospital Site.
Hours of Work/Shift: Monday – Friday 7:00am – 4:00pm EST including rotational weekend coverage.
Location: Across all sites.

Salary Band: $70,800 - $101,800 (salary band placement commensurate with experience).

Position Overview:

We are seeking an enthusiastic and visionary professional to shape the future of pharmacy technician education and patient care. With a strong foundation in developing and delivering patient-centered pharmacy services, you will drive initiatives that elevate health outcomes and advance excellence in care delivery.

As an integral member of the Pharmacy leadership team, you will lead efforts to design and implement innovative processes that uphold the highest standards of patient safety, accuracy, quality, and efficiency in product preparation and release. Your focus will extend to education and mentorship, ensuring the growth and development of Pharmacy Technician staff, Technician Interns, and students. Most notably, you will spearhead the creation of Canada’s first Pharmacy Technician Residency Program—paving the way for a new standard of excellence in the profession.

This transformative role offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact across all Trillium Health Partners (THP) sites. Flexibility and adaptability are key, as you work collaboratively in a dynamic, multi-site environment. The primary schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST, with rotational weekend coverage required.

Position Summary:

Leadership and Team Management:Recruit, coach, train, and monitor pharmacy staff, residents, interns, and students, in order to build a high-performing team.

  1. Coordinate daily activities, manage attendance, and oversee performance development programs.
  2. Address disciplinary actions as required, fostering a positive and professional work environment.
  3. Oversee scheduling, electronic time keeping, and team rounding to ensure smooth operations.

Quality Assurance and Operations:Lead the coordination of operations to meet standards set by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) and Accreditation Canada.

  1. Develop policies and guidelines to ensure appropriate drug distribution, promoting safety and efficiency.
  2. Collaborate with pharmacists and patient care teams to deliver high-quality, client-centered services.
  3. Monitor quality indicators and leverage metrics to identify opportunities for process enhancements.

Teaching & Education:Develop and oversee a comprehensive education and training program for Pharmacy Technicians and students across all sites, including PACE programs, Pharmacy Technician College placements, University Co-Op, and High School Co-Op students.

  1. Facilitate continuous learning opportunities to support the professional growth and development of all Pharmacy Technicians.
  2. Organize and manage orientation, evaluations, and annual training and certification requirements.
  3. Coordinate Pharmacy Technician preceptors for PACE and College placement students.
  4. Lead the design and implementation of a future Pharmacy Technician Residency Program.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:Develop workflow procedures and applications to enhance team productivity and support cost containment efforts.

  1. Identify and implement innovative strategies to drive operational excellence and improve patient care.

Additional Responsibilities:Oversee pharmacy automation operations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

  1. Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to overall department success.

Key Qualifications:Strong organizational and project management skills to develop and implement education programs.

  1. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse learners and stakeholders.
  2. Ability to design and deliver training sessions tailored to various audiences.
  3. Strong analytical skills to assess training needs and evaluate program effectiveness.
  4. Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional design.
  5. Proficiency in coordinating schedules, certifications, and evaluations.

Professional Experience:Experience in education, training, or facilitation roles.

  1. Background in program development or curriculum design.

Personal Attributes:Patience, adaptability, and a passion for teaching and mentorship.

Additional Assets:Active registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP).

  1. A minimum of 5 years of hospital pharmacy experience or equivalent expertise.
  2. Preceptor training with the OCP is considered an asset.
  3. Experience with teaching and advanced degrees in education is considered an asset.
  4. Proficiency in computer systems, including EPIC and Microsoft Office programs.
  5. A strong record of positive performance and reliable attendance.
  6. In-depth knowledge of legislative guidelines governing pharmacy practices.
  7. Extensive experience with unit dose distribution systems, CIVA, purchasing and inventory management, controlled substance regulations, and pre-packaging/manufacturing operating procedures.
  8. A demonstrated commitment to patient safety and a passion for delivering exceptional, patient-centered care.
  9. The ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, adapting effectively to periods of rapid change and transition.
