Position Description: Team Lead - Maintenance Operations

Work Location: 7904 43 Ave NW, Calgary AB

Reports to: Executive Director (ED)

Term and Hours of Work: Permanent, Full-Time, 40 hours per week. Must be able to work various, and/or rotating shifts. On call required 1 - 2 weekends per month.

Salary: $26.00 - $29.00 per hour based on experience and skills, on-call / call-out pay

Position Overview

Governed by the Vision, Mission and Values of the BCA, the Team Lead - Maintenance is a cross-trained position, responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the Bowness Community Centre and Arena. The custodial staff report to this position. Key responsibilities include oversight of the daily facility operations including maintenance and repairs, health and safety, and guest experience. Working conditions include working on slippery surfaces, outdoor weather conditions in summer and winter, and can be physically demanding including heavy lifting, shoveling and sweeping.

This position is an essential part of the team and works collaboratively with all staff, volunteers and other stakeholders of the Community Association. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, on site at the Bowness Community Association. The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a positive attitude who can act independently and exercise sound judgment, and who has a passion for giving back to the community.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong leadership and people management skills with an aptitude to support a diverse team of staff
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to facilitate efficiency amongst the facilities team
  • Post-Secondary Education in a related field and/or equivalent of 2 years’ experience in facility and/or maintenance management
  • Understanding of HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, and building systems
  • Mechanically inclined a requirement
  • Arena level 1 & 2 training an asset
  • Building Maintenance level 1 & 2 training an asset
  • Park & Sports Fields level 1 & 2 training an asset
  • Leadership Skills training an asset
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, CRM, HRM and/ or similar database software, scheduling software/systems
  • Strong customer service and conflict resolution skills
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects
  • Criminal and vulnerable sector record check is required
  • WHMIS, OHS, and First Aid Certification, all current safety training would be considered an asset

Specific Accountabilities and Expectations:

  • Provide empowering leadership to one Facility & Arena Custodian while co-leading the team of Facility & Arena Operators to ensure effective and efficient operations
  • Ensure facility is set up to accommodate all scheduled user groups and activities, and assist all guests, staff and volunteers in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Monitor interior and exterior areas (offices, arena, gym, lounge, parking lots, etc.) for safety and cleanliness and handle any hazards immediately and follow up as required
  • Work closely with facility staff to coordinate preventative maintenance of ice plant, arena, gym, field, lounge, commercial kitchen, rooms and all common areas to ensure the facility is maintained at the highest standard
  • Perform routine maintenance, record and file all records and logs, and make repairs as needed throughout the facility
  • Coordinate and facilitate maintenance of ice plant and ensure ice is maintained at the highest standard and follow up as required
  • Plan and facilitate the general operation and routine maintenance of the Olympia ice resurfacer and follow up as needed
  • Oversee proper operation and maintenance of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, safety and security systems and follow up as required
  • Provide detailed monthly reports on facility maintenance operations to the Executive Director including making recommendations for improvement
  • Assist with creation, implementation and ongoing maintenance of policies and procedures on occupational health and safety, operations and maintenance
  • Assist the ED with facility maintenance contracts and contractor coordination where needed
  • Work closely with the ED and be accountable to the monthly facility & operational budget
  • Collaborate with HR on interviewing, selecting candidates, staff evaluations, performance management and terminations
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities for the facility and supporting on-duty staff as required
  • Support long term planning including lifecycle priorities and capital improvement plans by participating in the OHS committee
  • Represent the Bowness Community Association at various stakeholders meetings related to the Bowness Community Centre and Arena, such as the local arena management group
  • Perform other duties as assigned

General Accountabilities and Expectations:

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all guests and users of the BCA ensuring a welcoming and inclusive space
  • Actively participate in the growth of the BCA towards being an equitable, inclusive and safe workplace
  • Stay up to date on BCA and community activities in order to answer phone, email and walk-in inquiries
  • Actively promote resident participation in the community of Bowness including membership, event and program participation, volunteerism and new initiatives
  • Develop strong relationships with volunteers, residents, stakeholders, and relevant community partners encouraging positive experiences with the BCA and building of collaborative relationships as required
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with all staff of the Community Association
  • Suggest creative ideas that encourage positive experiences for guests, staff and volunteers
  • Mentorship and development of staff to bring out the best in others
