Teacher Assistant

Department: Education

Classification/Level: TA Lakeview School $31, 325- $45, 864 (35h/week)

Employment Status: Term Full-Time

Reporting Relationship:

The Teacher Assistant will work under the direction of the Classroom Teacher and School Principal.

Position Summary:

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for the provision of classroom support and instruction where applicable.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist students with lessons under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher.
  2. Monitor and report to the classroom teacher on student progress.
  3. Assist in the preparation of learning materials and learning environment.
  4. Accompany and supervise students during activities in school gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, resource centre, and on field trips.
  5. Assist special needs students with mobility, communication, and personal hygiene.
  6. Prepare classroom displays and bulletin boards.
  7. Assist the teacher in the operation of office equipment (i.e., computers, tape recorders, photocopier, etc.).
  8. Carry out behaviour modification, personal development, and other therapeutic programs under the supervision of professionals such as special education instructors and speech and language pathologists.
  9. Monitor students during recesses and lunch breaks.
  10. May assist with preparing tests and worksheets.
  11. Interact effectively with students.
  12. Assist in the school library or office and other areas as assigned by the Classroom Teacher and the School Principal.
  13. Assist in instructing students in the Ojibwe language and provide related programming where applicable.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Preferred:

College Diploma in a related field of education or equivalent or social services with a minimum of two (2) years of work/volunteer-related experience with the completion of secondary school or equivalent.

Minimum:

College Diploma in a related field of study or five (5) years of work experience in a related field.

Other:

  • Good rapport with young people.
  • Good interpersonal skills, dependable, reliable, and willingness to work in cooperation within a strong team environment.
  • Must have knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history, and customs of the Anishnaabe.
  • Understanding and fluency in Anishinabemowin is a strong asset; or must be willing to learn the language.
  • First Aid Certificate and CPR would be an asset.
  • CRC/VSS requirement 30-days current and must be an original.
