The Tailings & Water Engineer is responsible for technical and operational related tasks at the Tailings Management Facility (TMF) and Water Management Facilities (WMF) at the Côté Gold site. This includes but is not limited to developing and calibrating the site-wide water balance, running water balance simulations for various scenarios, coordination with the Designer-of-Record (DOR), tailings deposition modelling, reviewing tailings property data (such as solids content and beach slope) to ensure conformance with design, coordinating with the Engineer-of-Record (EOR) to provide any required technical information or answer questions, doing regular technical inspections of dam structures, coordinating with tailings and water technicians to ensure safe and effective operation of the TMF, inspecting water management infrastructure in the Open Pit to ensure conformance with design, and monitoring water and geotechnical monitoring data. The engineer will collaborate and coordinate with mill & mine operations, maintenance, environment, projects and other departments, contractors, or consultants to ensure safe and efficient tailings and water operations for the site. The engineer will also maximize safe and effective operation of the tailings and water management facilities by proactively identifying any concerns and helping to develop methods to resolve them. The engineer will also take on the role of deputy Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) who is responsible for ensuring safe and effective operation of the TMF when the RTFE is not on site.

Key Responsibilities

Area 1: Tailings & water technical support

  • Develop, calibrate and update site-wide water balance on a regular basis.
  • Work with DOR to develop and implement the tailings deposition plan.
  • Perform regular dam inspections to ensure safety of structures.
  • Support in conducting risk assessments.
  • Support mine operations with pit dewatering plans.
  • Support compliance of TMF with applicable standards such as GISTM, MAC, TSM, etc.
  • Coordinate with DOR and EOR to provide all relevant technical information and answer any questions.
  • Understand tailings & water processes, plans and activities to enable close collaboration with engineers, environment, mill, mine operations and maintenance personnel in preparing and coordinating safe and effective operations.
  • Foster an inclusive work environment.
  • Engage with vendors, consultants, and contractors where required.

Area 2: Safe and effective tailings & water operation

  • Proactively identify issues and work collaboratively to resolve them to minimize impacts to operations.
  • Identify safety and environmental hazards in the workplace and work together with health and safety to mitigate them in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with Tailings & Water technicians to identify and help resolve operational issues that arise.
  • Monitor and inspect safety and performance of tailings and water dams.
  • Support ongoing tailings dam construction such as ensuring construction is as per design intent.
  • Commit to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Inspect dam instrumentation on a regular basis.
  • Inspect Open Pit water management infrastructure to ensure design conformance.
  • Ensure that the tailings and water facilities are operated as per design intent.
  • Review and understand the Operation, Surveillance and Maintenance manual (OMS) and update as needed.
  • Review and understand the overall tailings & water system and the key components for operational success.

Area 3: Collaborating effectively with team members

  • Help mentor and train new team members.
  • Participate in and lend your expertise to the team.
  • Work collaboratively to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively using the tools provided.
  • Ensure any deficiencies are communicated to the appropriate team members for follow-up.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver on our commitment to our team, our communities, the environment, and our shareholders.
  • Participate in the morning safety huddles.
  • Ensure shift cross over notes are accurate and complete.

  • Supports the work of consultants and contractors as required.
  • Work is complex involving non-routine technical assignments.
  • Problem resolution involves judgment in adapting or applying procedures to address and resolve unusual problem situations.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements and Nice To Haves

  • A college diploma or university degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • Driving experience on mine sites around heavy equipment.

Additional Qualifications – Competency Requirements

  • Previous exposure to tailings & water management design, construction, and operation.
  • Previous exposure to tailings and water dams.
  • Proven communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Has previous experience with Goldsim.
  • Proficiency in Muk3D is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS is considered an asset.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in Canada.
  • Self-motivated individual who is driven to find solutions and strive for continuous improvement.
