Job Summary

Under the general direction of the University Librarian and working as part of the Library Team, the Systems Librarian is responsible for administration and support of the library’s systems, including the Integrated Library System, web site, institutional repository, ILL software, Springshare systems, and the library’s LAMP server. The Systems Librarian is also responsible for developing custom web-based applications in support of the library’s ILS, web site, and services.

The Systems Librarian is the library’s main liaison with the university’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department and works closely with ITS staff and vendors to ensure the smooth operation of library hardware and software.

The incumbent is responsible for monitoring industry trends and best practices related to information access and discovery and recommending library systems and technology solutions and workflows, as well as for developing and documenting internal processes and procedures related to library systems.

The incumbent will participate in some general librarian responsibilities including reference services, library instruction, and collection development. They will serve as the liaison librarian to one or more academic areas and university committees. Evening and weekend work may be included. The Systems Librarian is based on the Abbotsford campus; travel to other campuses (Chilliwack and Mission primarily) may be necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Master of Library and Information Studies (or equivalent) from an American Libraries Association accredited institution is required. Academic or professional library background is required.

Minimum two years’ experience demonstrating management of library systems and technology; SirsiDynix Symphony experience highly desirable.

Demonstrated experience with UNIX/LINUX operating environments, as well as relational databases and SQL.

Practical experience in developing APIs to integrate multiple systems, such as connecting an ILS with Banner or other systems.

Familiarity with library metadata standards, including MARC, for bibliography and authority records is required.

Familiarity with Libguides and other Springshare products, Askaway, experience with Relais ILL or other ILL systems and institutional repository software, particularly Islandora, is considered an asset.

Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and adapt to change.

Demonstrated experience in systems analysis and design, user experience practices, and/or implementation of library systems and services.

Experience with vendor communications and project management is considered an asset.

Experience with enterprise-level service and technology migrations is desirable.

Experience planning and delivering instructional sessions, and/or experience as a liaison librarian to academic programs is considered an asset.

Knowledge of user experience practices is considered an asset.

Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Ability to successfully support and communicate with persons at all levels of technical ability. Excellent organizational, analytic, and abstraction skills.

Ability to recognize, respect, and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds is required. Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to equity, diversity, inclusivity, Indigenization, decolonization, and accessibility.
