Position Details

The University of Lethbridge Information Technology Services department is seeking applications for a Systems Analyst. This is a full-time, continuing position located at our Lethbridge campus. Preference will be given to candidates who will work full-time at the Lethbridge campus; however, some hybrid work arrangements for Alberta-based candidates may be arranged.

Reporting to the Manager of Infrastructure, the Systems Analyst is a capable and versatile professional with a broad set of technical capabilities and will primarily be responsible for administering a large Windows Server environment. This includes key applications such as Active Directory, Entra ID, System Center, and Azure. Maintaining the overall health, reliability, and uptime of this environment will be a high priority for the incumbent.

Information security is of critical importance in this environment. The Systems Analyst is committed to strengthening the organization’s security posture by implementing and adhering to security best practices, responding to and mitigating security vulnerabilities as they arise, and keeping apprised of the latest developments from vendors.

Primary Responsibilities Include

  • Provisioning new servers running Windows Server, maintaining existing servers, and decommissioning servers as needed.
  • Maintaining a lifecycle of Windows Servers to ensure the organization is in a good position relative to Microsoft and other vendors’ support lifecycles.
  • Administering Active Directory and Entra ID with expertise in Group Policies and directory best practices.
  • Administering a System Center suite, including Operations Manager and Configuration Manager.
  • Ensuring servers are adequately backed up, restoring from backup as required.
  • Monitoring servers and responding as necessary.
  • Administering the organization’s IP address management solution.
  • Assisting with other colleagues’ or departments’ projects that integrate with Windows Server, acting as a subject matter expert to help advise and design appropriate solutions or integrations.
  • Keeping apprised of Microsoft’s and other vendors’ continuous development in these areas, taking actions as necessary to prepare the organization for any changes that may impact current processes or workflows.
  • Responding to and mitigating security vulnerabilities as they arise.
  • Automating large-scale or repetitive tasks using object-oriented PowerShell.
Additional Responsibilities

  • Shared maintenance of physical data centers.
  • Shared administration of hypervisor environments, currently Hyper-V and VMware.
  • Shared administration of telephony servers, currently Cisco Unified Communications.
  • Minor administration of Windows Server-related applications that may arise from time to time such as MS SQL, IIS, and other third-party applications.
  • Representing the University by regularly collaborating with peers at other institutions and through provincial, national, or other collaborative bodies.
Position Qualifications

This position plays a key role in ensuring these services are properly supported, maintained, and enhanced. Numerous University audiences rely on these critical services, and therefore a high degree of planning, coordination, and attention to detail is required to ensure business continuity. Strong organization, written and verbal communication skills are essential.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have The Following Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Several years of related work experience.
  • Several years of experience administering Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to administer Microsoft System Center.
  • Proven ability with programming using PowerShell or other languages.
  • Background in Entra ID and Azure administration is an asset.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting a wide variety of application issues.
  • Knowledge and experience with service management processes such as incident management, service request management, change management, etc.
  • Professional designations related to systems administration are an asset.
Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $63,255.50 - $79,575.80 annually
Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $63,255.50 - $95,896.11 annually (APO - Grade 3)
