Lead the City’s external and internal recycling and waste diversion efforts, working with residents, waste haulers, and other industry stakeholders. Collaborate with other City departments on internal-facing environmental initiatives and serve as the City’s representative and primary spokesperson for advancing and promoting communitywide sustainability and environmental initiatives. Develop educational campaigns to inform the community on single-stream recycling program and other environmental programs. Plan and organize events such as the Big Sioux Stewardship Summit, the Big Sioux River Cleanup, and other City-hosted public events.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental management, business or public administration, communications, or related degree along with a demonstrated interest in recycling and sustainability; or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority. Four (4) years’ related experience is preferred.
Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.
Passion for conservation and/or interest in waste diversion, recycling, and composting.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as well as excellent public presentation skills.
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of mass and targeted communication and marketing.
Ability to establish working relationships, building trust and credibility with both internal and external stakeholders including City employees, community leaders, elected officials, and constituents of varied backgrounds.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing priorities effectively. Strong analytical mindset with the ability to deconstruct large, complex policies into clear, actionable strategies and initiatives.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.
Self-motivated with ability to work independently and innovatively in a high-pressure, high-expectation environment effectively prioritizing and executing tasks.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of environmental protection and natural resource management.
Knowledge of necessary principles to incorporate project/program management skills.
Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and make recommendations in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies on a federal, state, and local level.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the Public Works department.
