Please note: As an Island Health funded program, ICCS requires staff working in Assisted Living Programs to supply immunization records to have on file.

Here at Island Crisis Care Society, as a Casual Support Worker with a focus on Assisted Living care, you have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact within our Assisted Living Programs while providing flexible and rewarding employment within the Nanaimo and Parksville communities. We are seeking individuals whose qualifications and attributes align with the demands of this role. The Support Worker will partner with our Assisted Living Programs Manager supporting our Assisted Living Programs throughout Nanaimo and Parksville.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities and experiences:

  • Front-Line Residential Experience: The ideal candidate will have a background in front-line residential care, bringing valuable insights into the challenges and dynamics of assisting program participants in their day-to-day lives. Possesses knowledge regarding substance use disorders, mental health challenges, treatment, and recovery and is familiar with and understands the "Housing First" model and the importance of biopsychosocial-spiritual support in addressing these challenges.
  • Independence and Initiative: Our organization values individuals who can work independently in smaller programs. You should be self-driven, demonstrating the ability to manage tasks and responsibilities autonomously while contributing to the overall success of our assisted living programs.
  • One-on-One Client Interaction: Your ability to connect with program participants on a personal level is essential. The ideal candidate will excel in one-on-one interactions, fostering trust and building meaningful relationships with clients while maintaining healthy boundaries. Your empathetic and compassionate approach will make a significant difference in their lives.
  • Healthcare Aid Experience: While this role doesn’t include personal care responsibilities, we highly value candidates with prior experience as a healthcare aide or in a related healthcare role. This experience equips you with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide essential care and support to our program participants, ensuring their well-being and comfort.

Classification: Community Support Worker (Grid 10)

Position Purpose

A Support Worker carries out their duties to create a professional and therapeutic environment with quality support for vulnerable adults. This contributes in a meaningful way to the ICCS mission to “Provide shelter and care to those in need, reflecting of the love of God in loving one another.”

  1. Participates in the assessment, goal setting and program planning (Personal Service Plan) for clients (program participants). Documents, implements and provides input into the evaluation of the program.
  2. Assists with providing life skills training such as meal preparation, housekeeping, personal care skills and personal finance and implements personal service plans.
  3. Participates in various client-focused activities in accordance with care plans.
  4. Assists program participants to function more independently within the program space or in their own supportive housing unit, and in the community. Assists clients with daily life skills, social skills and/or behaviour management. Teaches and assists clients with activities such as organization and de-cluttering, basic cooking, money management, shopping, household safety, pet care. Facilitates physical, recreational, educational, social and vocational activities.
  5. Provides emotional support and feedback to residents and their families.
  6. Identifies social, economic, recreational and educational services in the community that will meet clients’ needs. Maintains liaison with other agencies, professionals, government officials and the community.
  7. In programs where a dedicated cook is not on staff, prepares, cooks and serves meals and snacks, including those for special dietary needs and special occasions, in accordance with safety and health standards and the menu plan.
  8. Recognizes, analyzes and deals with potential emergency situations such as clients’ aggressive behaviour to ensure no harm comes to the client and/or the public. Reports problems to the supervisor.
  9. Administers first aid and medication in accordance with established policy.
  10. Assists with case management by identifying potential problems and reporting any difficulties. Provides input to counsellor, professional, with regard to the development of appropriate program plans to achieve residents’ objectives. Contributes to the evaluation of residents’ progress and prepares reports.
  11. Maintains reports such as statistics, logbooks, daily activities on residents.
  12. Ensures health and safety standards are maintained.
  13. When required, assists with residence maintenance and housekeeping duties such as laundry, sweeping, mopping floors, mowing lawns, inventory, shopping, cleaning equipment and food services.
  14. Performs other related duties as required.

Education: A diploma in a related human/social service field

Experience: One-year recent related experience (or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training)

Certifications:

  • Valid First Aid Certificate with CPR
  • Valid Naloxone Certificate
  • Valid Food Safe Certificate
  • Valid WHMIS Certificate
  • Non-Violent Crisis Prevention

Classification: Residential Sleep Worker (Grid 5)

Position Purpose

As a key member of the program team, the Asleep Overnight Worker supports the program by being on site during overnight hours and waking to attend to unusual circumstances as required. Provides assistance with morning and evening routines.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Sleeps through the night hours and is required to wake in order to attend to unusual night-time needs that arise with the clients.
  2. Supports clients with the household morning and evening routines such as meal preparation, cues and reminders, and basic housekeeping.
  3. Distribute medication and supervises clients to administer their medication in accordance with established policy, Assisted Living Regulations, and each client’s individual care plan.
  4. Ensures that residents follow house rules.
  5. Responds to emergencies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  6. Completes related records such as logbooks, charts and incident reports.
  7. Secures the building by arming alarms and locking doors and windows.
  8. Performs other related duties as required.

Education: Grade 12

Training and Experience: Three (3) months recent related experience. Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Please note: For the Casual Support Worker position, the minimum availability required is 10 shifts per month including:

  • Ability to work 2 weekends each month
  • Ability to work 5 overnight shifts each month
  • Ability to work on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day
