Reporting to the Superintendent of Transit Fleet Maintenance, the Supervisor(s) play a critical role in contributing to the City Operations vision. As a member of the Section Extended Leadership Team, this position focuses on driving the strategic direction and success of the unit. Simultaneously, the Supervisor is accountable for the day-to-day implementation of human, social, technical, and operational systems necessary for the efficient maintenance and repair of over 960 buses.
This role is responsible to ensure the safe, effective and efficient operations of a Transit Fleet Maintenance Garage resulting in the daily provision of clean, safe and reliable Transit Service to the citizens of Edmonton. Responsibilities include team leadership, garage operations, administrative and financial management (overseeing an $8-10 million budget), and maintaining client relations within a 24/7 environment. The Supervisor directly leads up to 60 ATU staff and limited CSU employees, including Forepersons, Technicians, Servicepersons, Bus Cleaners, and Shop Clerks. Responsibilities may also include operations of the TFM Tow/Tire shop as well as the Farebox Repair Shop. Success in this role leads to high-performing units characterized by trust, efficient resource use, organizational effectiveness, and strong employee engagement.
What will you do?
- Meet the daily fleet requirements of our client, Edmonton Transit, through effective operations management
- Manage the human and physical resources required to provide service in a safe, environmentally and financially responsible manner; all while meeting service standards
- Manage a team of subordinate unionized supervisors who lead operational teams
- Manage budget through preparation, monitoring and monthly reporting
- Advance Branch goals by applying or developing policies and standards for accountability and efficient system management
- Manage staff life-cycle through recruitment, training, mentoring and performance management; while ensuring the application of applicable clauses within the collective agreements
- Represent Transit Fleet Maintenance with client departments to ensure service levels meet needs; plan adequate resources; ensure garage operations meet Fleet and Facilities Branch and City policies/goals
- Identify areas for process or productivity improvement and oversee the change implementation where justified
- Maintain optimal performance through collaboration with FFS management departments as well as, Human Resources, Disability Management, Labour Relations, Unions, and customers to coordinate work activities
- Develop, implement, and oversee emergency, safety and security systems and/or security of fare boxes/cash handling equipment
Qualifications- Journeyman Certification (Heavy Duty, Automotive or Auto Body Mechanic) or education in Engineering Technology, Business, Project Management or related field
- Experience in a leadership role within a bus or heavy duty equipment repair and maintenance facility, preferably within a unionized environment

Skills required for success:
- Financial and Operational Management: Proven ability to manage a substantial garage budget ($8-$10M), shop resources including staffing, and adapt to varied workloads across multiple facilities, while ensuring efficient operations and meeting client expectations
- Leadership and People Management: Strong leadership and change management skills, including talent development through mentoring, fostering a positive work environment, delegating tasks effectively, promptly addressing employee concerns, and managing labor relations, including union interactions and grievance resolution
- Communication and Customer Service: Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), including public speaking and report presentations, combined with exceptional customer service skills and the ability to manage client expectations effectively
- Technical Proficiency and Problem Solving: Strong computer literacy and technical capabilities to utilize various software systems (Fleet Software, PeopleSoft, SAP, Google Suite, Microsoft Office), manage emergency situations with sound judgment, and navigate technology for communication and operations

Conditions of employment and work environment:
- Up to: 1 permanent, full-time position
- Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
- Salary Range: $102,590 - $128,237 (Annually)
- This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)This position requires participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation, which may include availability during evenings and weekends.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent); the successful candidate must arrange for their own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy; this will require business auto insurance.
