The primary responsibility of the Supervisor, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) is to effectively manage Seaspan Vancouver Shipyards interests related to specifications, welding codes, standards or section compliance and the required process controls. The incumbent will interface with naval and commercial stakeholders as required for effective oversight of the in-process controls driven from these requirements. The NDE supervisor will report to the Senior Manager, Welding Engineering and Welding Quality.
The Supervisor, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) will be responsible for the direct supervision of VSY’s NDE Technicians. The role will monitor the execution and oversight of Company Welding Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Quality Management System compliance, sign offs at specified quality control process examinations, traveler and ITP hold points when applicable.
This role works with programs and departments to ensure that all standard operating procedures reflect the methods and techniques currently in use and that the resulting workmanship from these procedures meets customer and Seaspan’s quality expectations. Complexity of the role comes from meeting regulatory requirements and also meeting customer’s needs in a timely and prudent manner while maintaining all quality objective evidence required for quality control and future audits. Errors may go undetected for a period of time until outside inspections and/or audits, and could have serious impacts on production, meeting targets, budgets and could impact relationships with the customer and various stakeholders.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you’ll do
- Plan and track NDE objectives, timeline, priorities, and resources.
- Coordinate and control the day-to-day operations of inspection personnel.
- Responsible for the application of the requirements of welding codes and standards.
- Maintain proper records of NDE, procedures and standards.
- Maintain and report on NDE reports, performance (metrics). This includes Visual Testing (VT).
- Direction and oversight of assigned NDE personnel and welding production support in carrying out review and insertion of welding related documentation for production work packages.
- It is expected from this role to perform NDE when needed to support production.
- Assess new and advanced NDE methods and technologies and provide recommendations to Welding Engineering.
- Support Welding Centre of Excellence projects.
What you’ll bring
- Current valid CWB CSA W178.2 level 2 Welding Inspector Certification (or international equivalent such as AWS CWI).
- Minimum 7 years of documented experience working at a position with full responsibility for all welding-related quality control and NDE functions, minimum 3 years supervision of welding inspection staff.
- Current valid CGSB MT Level 2 (ASNT PT Level 2) is desirable.
- A degree and/or diploma related to welding engineering technology, material/metallurgy, and welding supervision would be an asset.
- CGSB UT Level 1 or 2 certification is desirable.
- Shipbuilding and ship repair experience is highly desirable.
- Extensive knowledge of CSA, ABS, Lloyd’s, DNV and other regulatory requirements related to welding and fabrication in the marine industry.
- Extensive knowledge and working experience in non-destructive examination (NDE) such as VT, LPI, MPI, RT and UT.
- Knowledge of welding metallurgy, materials properties, welding preheat, interpass control and heat treatments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Work with minimum supervision.
- Strong attention to details, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Ability to obtain Industrial Security – NATO Secret designation.
- In-depth knowledge of quality-related procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of associated manufacturing processes and operations.
- Use and application of inspection quality test plans.
- Knowledge of Health and safety requirements and practices.

The estimated salary for this position is $112,700- $135,200. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
