About Us

The Correctional Services Division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area, there are two programs: Community Corrections & Correctional Facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program’s target group.

Community Corrections has 22 offices across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney and is responsible for the supervision of both adult and young persons serving community-based sentences. The sentences include probation, conditional sentence, custody and supervision, conditional supervision, and Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision. Probation Officers also supervise those released from custody on conditional releases and prepare pre-sentence investigations to assist the Courts in the sentencing process. Evidence-based Program facilitation and supports to specialized courts in areas of domestic violence, mental health, and wellness are also part of the role of a Probation Officer as well as Restorative Justice casework and collaboration with community justice agencies.

Four (4) adult correctional facilities and one (1) youth centre provide the safety and security of persons in custody while providing programs that address dynamic criminogenic factors to assist with their successful reintegration into the community.

Nova Scotia Correctional Services utilizes an evidence-based approach in both Community Corrections and custodial facilities. Core Correctional Practices (CCP) is the foundational practice that drives reintegration and rehabilitation practices deployed within Correctional Services. Utilizing CCP, Correctional Services staff can effectively interact, manage behaviour, and help facilitate change within target populations.

About Our Opportunity

Working to build a strong Occupational Health and Safety culture, the Correctional Services OHS Student will have the opportunity to gain relevant experience in various areas of OHS across both Community and Adult Custody Corrections.

Primary Accountabilities

Working with the Strategic Advisor OHS and Project Manager, the student will:

• Assist in the development of OHS assessments.
• Review and develop OHS policies and procedures.
• Develop educational tools and programs for new and existing employees.
• Create and deliver presentations to employees and management teams.
• Develop and implement policies, action plans, programs, and guidelines, and conduct data analysis to determine trends and areas for improvement in OHS systems.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you must be enrolled in a full-time post-secondary Occupational Health & Safety accredited program in Nova Scotia.

• Experience in researching, report writing, and presenting technical information is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
• Proficiency in using Excel, including add-ons.
• Capacity to manage various tasks while maintaining task deadlines.
• Strong research and communication (written and verbal) skills.
• Experience completing and compiling research findings, data collection/analysis, and formal report writing.
• Knowledge of performance measurement systems and accountability frameworks.

As the successful candidate, you will demonstrate independent judgment and tact in dealing with people as well as the ability to provide recommendations on complex issues impacting OHS. This position also requires individuals to exhibit a high level of professionalism as you will be dealing with sensitive situations.

Candidates must have a valid NS driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, and the ability to travel throughout the province as required. Expenses incurred will be reimbursed following NS Government travel regulations.

This position has an expected end date of August 29, 2025. The duration of the position is anticipated to be 18 weeks.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $18.22 - $29.69 Hourly
