- We are recruiting for a Summer Student/Junior Wildlife Biologist position to join our team based out of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a field environment and who also desires to continually develop their skills in wildlife assessment and wildlife research within the consulting industry.
Job Description: Working in both a field and office environment, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to cross-train in multiple fields if desired. The position requires travel and field work throughout Western and Northern Canada. Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Bird surveys and Sharp-tailed Grouse trapping, handling, and tagging
- Wildlife research and wildlife capture programs
- Construction monitoring, nest sweeps, wildlife sweeps, habitat surveys
- Data entry and quality assurance
- Assisting other disciplines (e.g., aquatics, veg/wetlands) as required
Requirements:
- Possession of, or working toward, a biological, conservation sciences, natural resource or equivalent degree from a recognized university
- Knowledge and experience with bird ID (sight, sound, and sign)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Availability to work flexible hours as project requirements dictate
- Willing and able to travel and work in remote locations in potentially harsh weather conditions for extended periods of time (2 to 3 weeks)
- Valid class 5 driver’s license & good physical condition
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
- Canadian citizen
Experience Assets:
- Capture and handling of wildlife (particularly birds)
- Field experience in Western or Northern Canada, consulting experience
- GPS, compass navigation
- Data analysis, statistical analysis, GIS (QGIS or Arc GIS)
- Field equipment use and maintenance (e.g., 4x4 trucks, trailers, UTV, Argo, ATV, boats, snowmobile)
