The Role:

We are currently seeking a Student Research Assistant for the Free Trade Activism History Project. The implementation of the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) in January 1989 marked a decisive moment in the restructuring of Canada’s economy. Free trade facilitated the rise of a new policy regime based on deregulation, privatization, and offshoring. With my collaborator Dr. Chris Hurl of Concordia University (Sociology), in January of 2022 we launched the Free Trade Activist Project website to establish our research data as a public resource to be used by other researchers. This website documents the formation of activist networks and the work they undertook to resist free trade. Currently, the website contains transcriptions of oral-history interviews with research participants, collected ephemera, a timeline of key events leading up to the signing and implementation of the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement in 1989, along with other information. Link: freetradehistory.ca. The Student Assistant Researcher will help to expand oral-history and archival content on the project’s website to broaden data available to the public.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with managing project website
  • Provide support to the supervisor for transcribing and coding interviews
  • Archive transcripts and ephemera (e.g. posters, leaflets, newsletters) on project website
  • Assist with literature review (historical documents related to the struggle against free trade)

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need:

  • Experience in web design and data archiving is an asset
  • Experience in interview transcribing is an asset
  • Interest in social movements, labour studies and Canadian public policy is an asset
  • Background in history or social sciences is an asset (e.g sociology, political science, communications)

  1. The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year; OR

Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria.” Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.
