Job description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-orientedStudent/Junior Biologist – Seasonal Placementto support various projects, including fieldwork, research, data analysis, and logistical planning. Reporting directly to the Senior Marine Biologist, the successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in environmental consulting, marine conservation, and drone-based data collection.

This position is contingent on successful funding. The position offers 16 weeks to contribute to real-world environmental projects and may involve fieldwork in remote locations.

Responsibilities

Field Program & Logistics Support

  • Assist with general planning for the field season.
  • Organize and prepare field equipment.
  • Support equipment modifications through research and troubleshooting.
  • Work with the team to modify equipment.
  • Input of field data into a cloud-based database.

Field Work (Drone Operations & Observations)

  • Act as a Drone Pilot during surveys for data collection.
  • Assist with in-field data collection.
  • Follow Health, Safety, and, Environmental (HSE) protocols for fieldwork.

Environmental Research & Data Analysis

  • Conduct research and literature reviews to support ongoing projects.
  • Help manage and maintain project documentation and databases.
  • Contribute to the development of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) documents.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Support project managers and scientists in the preparation of reports and presentations.
  • Assist in compiling and formatting field reports, ensuring all relevant data is documented.

Administrative & Outreach Support

  • Assist with daily administrative tasks to ensure smooth company operations.
  • Engage in educational and outreach activities related to Edgewise Environmental’s initiatives.
  • Help coordinate internal and external communications, project documentation, and scheduling.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Must have a valid Transport Canada drone pilot license and operational experience.
  • Currently enrolled as a student in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, or a related field. (Undergraduate and Postgraduate students applicable).
  • Must be legally qualified to work in Canada.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Experience with data collection, documentation, and reporting.
  • Comfortable working in remote field locations and outdoor environments.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to drone operations and data collection.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Must have strong independent thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and data management software.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Maintain compliance with HSE policies at all times, including compliance with client-specific HSE policies when working on-site.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with marine wildlife observation or environmental fieldwork.
  • Familiarity with drone modifications, flight planning, or aerial surveys.
  • Knowledge of GIS software or remote sensing technologies.
  • Experience in technical writing or report development.
  • Bilingual (French/English) is an asset.

Location:St. John’s, NL (Downtown office with parking!)

Hybrid Work:2 days remote, 3 days in-office (first month will be required in-office full-time)

Fieldwork:Opportunity to participate in field research and drone-based surveys

Duration:Seasonal placement of 16 weeks – contingent on successful funding.
