Vegetation Management (VM) position description:
Supports the vegetation management program by assisting with Integrated Pest Management, disturbed site reclamation/restoration, and vegetation monitoring. Conducts front and backcountry control and surveys for non-native vegetation while collecting geospatial data for monitoring purposes. The majority of the work involves mechanical and chemical control of non-native vegetation (using hand tools, brush saws, herbicides, etc.). The remainder of the work includes restoration activities (soil amendments, seed collection, planting, staking, translocations) and monitoring (transects, rangeland health monitoring). The position is field based, with the expectation of working in a team environment and spending the majority of time outdoors. Successful applicants must be willing to acquire an assistant applicator license upon hire and apply herbicides in accordance with our Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPMP). Applicants must be comfortable working in remote backcountry settings for extended periods (up to 5 days). Vegetation students will also be collaborating with aquatic and riparian management activities.
Ecological Integrity Monitoring (EIM) position description:
Students will conduct field work to monitor forest and alpine songbird diversity, pika abundance, amphibian occupancy and wildlife occupancy (wildlife remote cameras). In addition, students will support EIM projects at the office with fieldwork preparation and planning, organizing and servicing field equipment, data entry and management, remote camera photo classification, and songbird/amphibian audio classification. Students must be physically fit; and able to safely travel, navigate and spend full days in the wilderness.
Aquatic Management (AQ) position description:
Students will support aquatic management programs through a variety of fieldwork projects including but not limited to: hydraulic and physical aquatic habitat assessments; riparian restoration; water quality monitoring and vegetation removal. This position is field-based and requires applicants to be physically fit, navigate safely in remote areas of the Park, work effectively in a team and be prepared for all weather conditions. Aquatics students will also be collaborating with vegetation management activities.
Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada’s outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.
The results may be used in the future to fill other temporary student vacancies that may arise in the Banff Field Unit, in various locations, with full or part-time hours for various tenures, depending on status of the selected candidate.

Successful completion of at least one year at a recognized post-secondary institution in a program leading to a diploma or degree; in a field related to biological sciences, ecology, geography, environmental sciences, or other field closely related to natural science.
Currently registered as a full-time or part-time student in a recognized institution.
Proof of education will be required at time of interview.
Degree equivalency
CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession and maintenance of valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate.
EXPERIENCE IN:
EX1: Strong wilderness travel skills including experience hiking long distances with a heavy backpack, often in off trail and steep mountainous terrain; during inclement weather conditions; and on day and overnight trips.
EX2: Experience following scientific field data collection protocols and recording data accurately. Other approaches such as traditional Indigenous methods could be considered.
