The Role
The Indigenous Student Services (ISS) Student Assistants provide support to the Indigenous Student Services team in a variety of day-to-day, programming, and student outreach activities. ISS Student Assistants are role models within the Indigenous student community at Douglas College and provide peer-to-peer mentorship to other Indigenous students.
Responsibilities
- Actively participate in training workshops, including peer helping, effective communication, Indigenous cultural protocols, and FoodSafe.
- Provide peer-to-peer support to Indigenous students through active listening and referrals to appropriate services.
- Support the day-to-day functioning of the Indigenous student lounge, including tidying and organizing supplies.
- Coordinate projects and events that contribute to Indigenous student orientation and engagement.
- Support food security initiatives by cooking and coordinating workshops.
- Welcome guests into the Indigenous Gathering Place and provide support during events.
- Create promotional materials for the department using design tools.
- Support College Elders during events.
- Participate in community events with Indigenous partners.
- Participate in presentations to new and prospective Indigenous students.
- Participate in regular ISS team meetings to provide student input.
- Participate in College-wide committees as a student representative.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
- Self-identified Indigenous student (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit).
- At least one previous semester as a student at Douglas College.
- In good academic standing (not on academic probation).
Eligibility Criteria
Domestic students must meet ONE of the following:
- Enrolled in a minimum of one (3 credit) course at Douglas College throughout the work term.
- Enrolled in a minimum of one (3 credit) course at Douglas College in the term preceding the work term and intend to enroll in the term following.
- Enrolled in a minimum of two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term.
- Enrolled in a minimum of two (3 credit) courses at another accredited institution in the term preceding and intend to enroll in the term following.
International students must meet ONE of the following:
- Enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year.
- International student at another accredited institution in B.C. with a valid Study Permit allowing employment.
An original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and a valid Study Permit are required before commencing work.
