Join Our Mission: Help the Helpers with Jane

Let's kick things off with a quick intro. Jane is a team that's all about fostering growth, spreading delight, and serving our healthcare community. We're on the hunt for people ready to jump in and join us while we simplify the lives of healthcare practitioners and patients daily. And guess what? Jane is a remote-first company, meaning every role at Jane, including this one, is remote — giving you the freedom to work from any corner of Canada.

Your Role in Our Journey

The Telehealth Team is thrilled to be looking for a Staff Software Developer to help shape the future of Jane’s Online Appointments platform. As a Full Stack Staff Developer, you will design and implement high-performing, scalable solutions that empower health practitioners to deliver exceptional care to their clients. Your work will directly impact thousands of users weekly, enabling innovative Telehealth experiences and supporting Jane’s mission to provide best-in-class tools for healthcare providers.

We are looking for a developer with deep expertise in event-driven, service-oriented architecture to help evolve our platform and drive technical excellence. You’ll play a key role in data modeling and working with a variety of data stores (Postgres, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, DynamoDB), ensuring reliability and performance at scale. Your experience with observability and tooling (Datadog, New Relic, Grafana/Prometheus, ELK stack) will be invaluable in maintaining system health and diagnosing complex issues efficiently.

Beyond the technical skills, we are looking for a leader who is passionate about mentoring and coaching engineers, fostering a culture of learning, and helping to develop the next generation of technical talent at Jane. If you’re excited about building impactful Telehealth solutions, working with modern technologies, and shaping the future of healthcare, we’d love to hear from you!

The Impact You Could Have:

  • A passion for driving innovation in Telehealth, helping health practitioners deliver exceptional care through scalable and reliable online appointment solutions.
  • A strong desire to deliver impactful features: the willingness to experiment, adapt, and iterate quickly to enhance the user experience.
  • Advocate for customer success by solving real-world healthcare challenges while prioritizing the safety, privacy, and security of sensitive Telehealth data.
  • A mindset for operational excellence, ensuring the team monitors and maintains production infrastructure with a focus on observability, traceability, and reliability for video communication, backend services, and frontend performance.
  • Expertise in breaking down complex projects into actionable tasks, planning workstreams, identifying dependencies, and mitigating risks to deliver projects effectively.
  • Commitment to sharing knowledge by mentoring developers, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.
  • Ownership and drive to continuously improve the quality and productivity of deliverables, including code reviews, performance optimizations, and security enhancements.
  • Proficiency in delivering thin, tested, and valuable end-to-end features for customers through an agile and iterative development process.

The experience we feel we need:

  • Our Telehealth team at Jane primarily works with Ruby on Rails and React, but we welcome applicants with experience in Kotlin, Java, C#, & Python. We strongly believe that great developers can learn any tech stack, so you’ll have the resources and support needed to ramp up on ours if you haven't worked with it previously. Please don't hesitate to apply!
  • A University Degree in Computer Science or a STEM degree combined with approximately 10+ years of hands-on experience as a Software Engineer. Candidates with a Master's or PhD may require less hands-on experience.
  • If you don't have a formal degree or education in Computer Science or a STEM field, we value additional relevant experience (typically 3+ years) and the ability to demonstrate equivalent technical expertise and meaningful contributions.
  • Depth and diversity of experience, already operating at the Staff level, demonstrated by working in different capacities across multiple products and companies, bringing a well-rounded perspective on various development methodologies, problem-solving techniques, and team collaboration.
  • Extensive experience and ownership in design and architecture, making impactful architectural decisions across more than one team and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Proven experience in leading technical efforts with more than one team, driving decisions that ensure high technical standards while aligning with broader organizational objectives.
  • A desire to remain actively involved in coding while leading teams through technical challenges, balancing hands-on work with high-level strategy.
  • Experience in creating and upholding best practices and standards for teams and/or across an organization ensuring adoption and alignment.
  • Actively involved in creating technical roadmaps that align engineering efforts with strategic business goals, and partnering with leadership to influence business direction.
  • An effective mentor, coach, and guide for Developers during pull request (PR) reviews, fostering technical growth and upholding coding excellence.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, collaborating effectively with stakeholders, including Product Managers, Designers, and others to ensure cohesive and efficient product development.

Compensation Expectations for the Role

Jane’s committed to paying our team members fairly, clearly, and above all, paying for growth. This role has a minimum annual salary of $154,400 and maximum annual salary of $241,300. As you may have noticed, this salary range is quite large, and this is intentional to account for the growth someone will experience in the role throughout their time at Jane (i.e., from building the skills, to accomplished, to highly proficient, all the way to achieving excellence in the role). When hiring talented folks to join the Jane team, we’ve found that new team members are best set up for success when hired with the expectation of being fully accomplished in the role, which for this role would reflect a starting salary of $183,400.

It's also possible to join Jane at a salary above or below this, which would mean a salary below $183,400 typically reflects someone who has all the potential to be fully accomplished in the role but doesn't yet possess all the skills required, while a salary above $183,400 is typically for individuals who are currently in this role at Jane and had the opportunity to make a significant positive impact on our customers, product and company with deep Jane knowledge. At Jane, we pay for growth, which means that you’ll continue to have conversations about your career development with your manager and see your compensation grow over time as you build an amazing career with us.

At Jane, we’re committed to fostering an environment that allows you to come to work as your truest self. We believe it’s important to actively recognize, embrace, and celebrate our differences in order to make Jane an inclusive, equitable, and diverse workplace.

We want to build a team of people who make conversations rich with perspective and experience. We are committed to listening to every voice in order to learn and grow because doing this will allow us to meet the needs of the diverse community of helpers that Jane serves.

We do not tolerate discrimination, prejudice, or oppressive isms of any kind. Employment is decided on the basis of qualifications, merit, experience, and the needs of the Jane community. We encourage anyone who requires accommodation or adjustments throughout the interview process to let us know, and we will do our best to support you.
