Your Role in Our Journey

We're looking for a Full-Stack Staff Developer to join our Payments team. This team is responsible for managing all payment-related user workflows, whether online or via terminal, directly impacting company revenue. You'll work closely with our support and security teams to help customers mitigate fraud risks. Your expertise will be used to guide the teams in complex technical decisions and to provide mentorship and support where needed. You’ll also get the opportunity to contribute to the code base, set patterns, and implement the more complex areas of the features you are building. You will be working with a combination of languages (Ruby on Rails monolith with React and Typescript) as you contribute to various code bases.

We’re looking for someone with experience in API design, as Jane takes an API-first approach, and integrating with third-party platforms. Ideal candidates will have expertise in the security domain and best practices, as well as exposure to HIPAA-governed implementations, PII-sensitive environments, or PCI compliance. Familiarity with data modeling and working with various data stores, such as Postgres, MySQL, Redis, and Kafka, is also highly valued.

The Impact You Could Have

  • You will provide mentorship and coaching for the developers on your teams, writing code, participating in reviews, and supporting the team throughout the entire lifecycle.
  • You will apply your deep understanding of tooling and best practices around testability and maintainability of code to the projects, enabling you and the team to create a production solution that meets a high quality bar.
  • You will deliver projects that are monitored, traceable, and debuggable, ensuring great customer experiences when using our products.
  • You will drive technical decisions for your teams and bring those technical experiences to the architectural forums at Jane.
  • You will champion use cases that ensure the safety and security of our customers.

The Experience We Feel We Need

  • A University Degree in Computer Science or STEM Degree or through certifications (e.g., Bootcamp) plus approximately 10+ years of hands-on experience as a Software Engineer. If you hold a PhD or Masters, we require less hands-on experience.
  • If a formal Degree/education in Computer Science/STEM is not held, additional relevant experience (typically 3+ years) is encouraged to apply, provided you can demonstrate equivalent technical expertise and contributions.
  • Depth and diversity of experience, already operating at the Staff level, demonstrated by working in different capacities across multiple products and companies, bringing a well-rounded perspective on various development methodologies, problem-solving techniques, and team collaboration.
  • Extensive experience and ownership in design and architecture, making impactful architectural decisions across more than one team and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Proven experience in leading technical efforts with more than one team, driving decisions that ensure high technical standards while aligning with broader organizational objectives.
  • A strong desire to remain actively involved in coding while leading teams through technical challenges, balancing hands-on work with high-level strategy.
  • Experience in creating and upholding best practices and standards for teams and/or across an organization ensuring adoption and alignment.
  • Actively involved in creating technical roadmaps that align engineering efforts with strategic business goals, and partnering with leadership to influence business direction.
  • An effective mentor, coach, and guide for Developers during pull request (PR) reviews, fostering technical growth and upholding coding excellence.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex technical solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, collaborating effectively with stakeholders, including Product Managers, Designers, and others to ensure cohesive and efficient product development.
  • Our development team at Jane primarily works with Ruby on Rails, but we welcome applicants with experience in Java, C#, and Python. In this role, you'll be working with RoR, React, and Typescript. You will have the resources to ramp up on our tech stack if you haven't worked with it previously, so please don't hesitate to apply!

Compensation Expectations for the Role

Jane’s committed to paying our team members fairly, clearly, and above all, paying for growth. This role has a minimum annual salary of $154,400 and maximum annual salary of $241,300. As you may have noticed, this salary range is quite large, and this is intentional to account for the growth someone will experience in the role throughout their time at Jane (i.e., from building the skills, to accomplished, to highly proficient, all the way to achieving excellence in the role). When hiring talented folks to join the Jane team, we’ve found that new team members are best set up for success when hired with the expectation of being fully accomplished in the role, which for this role would reflect a starting salary of $183,400.

It's also possible to join Jane at a salary above or below this, which would mean a salary below $183,400 typically reflects someone who has all the potential to be fully accomplished in the role but doesn't yet possess all the skills required, while a salary above $183,400 is typically for individuals who are currently in this role at Jane and had the opportunity to make a significant positive impact on our customers, product, and company with deep Jane knowledge.
