Job description

Are you a skilled DevOps & Observability Specialist ready to make a significant impact? Play a vital role in ensuring the stability, performance, and efficiency of our enterprise IT systems. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining monitoring, observability, automation, and cloud infrastructure solutions to optimize IT operations, centralize data and processes, and improve visibility for support teams and customers. What will you do?

  • Research, validate, design, deploy, and manage observability and reporting platforms, leveraging them to drive value in alignment with branch direction and objectives
  • Develop real-time monitoring dashboards, alerts, and log analysis pipelines to detect system anomalies provide visibility to stakeholders
  • Serve as a technical mentor for IT analysts and support teams in areas of operations, automation, and observability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (infrastructure, application, and security) to drive improvements, facilitate adoption of tools and software solutions, and identify opportunities for growth
  • Develop and maintain code to integrate tools and platforms, improve reliability and efficiency via automation, and enhance existing processes
  • Support and enhance incident, problem, and change management processes
  • Consolidate and centralize data and processes to improve accuracy and eliminate gaps
  • Provide operational support and guidance across IT teams

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary Degree in a related discipline and at least 6 years experience in an IT Analytical role or equivalent including demonstrated ability to lead initiatives of all sizes and complexities. Formal certification in the area of expertise is desirable
  • OR post-secondary diploma and at least 7 years experience in an IT Analytical role or equivalent including demonstrated ability to lead initiatives of all sizes and complexities. Formal certification in the area of expertise is desirable
  • Technical experience across in a computing environment similar to the City of Edmonton's:
    • Complex and highly diverse data, application and technology environments
    • Hybrid environment of cloud and on-premise data, application, and technologies
  • Experience providing operational infrastructure support across multiple technology tiers including on-premises and cloud infrastructure

Skills required for success:

  • In-depth experience deploying on-premises IT infrastructure and Google Cloud Platform solutions
  • Expertise with various observability platforms for logs, metrics, and traces, dashboards, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with technical teams to enhance operational visibility and processes
  • Proficient in log aggregation & analysis techniques
  • Experience with synthetic transactions and RUM
  • Advanced knowledge of AIOps & event correlation for proactive issue identification
  • Skilled in configuring distributed tracing for end-to-end visibility in cloud-native apps.
  • Expert capabilities with multiple scripting and development languages for infrastructure automation and custom software solutions
  • Strong API & integration skills, with cross-team experience for data/process consolidation
  • Experienced in workflow orchestration platforms
  • Expertise in CI/CD pipelines and version control systems
  • In-depth ITSM Platform and process experience (ITIL-aligned incident, problem, change management)
  • Expert in SRE principles (high availability, fault tolerance, scalability) with deep understanding of SLIs/SLOs/error budgets
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and techniques through hands-on, self-guided research and training
  • Expertise in using critical & analytical thinking techniques to solve technical and business problems
  • Proficient in hands-on operational support of multiple tiers including cloud, compute, network, storage, databases, applications, etc

Work Environment:

  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
