This role involves the design and development of a portable, rugged ultrasound imaging system that leverages GPU-assisted computing. You will work collaboratively with ultrasound physicists, doctors, and biomedical scientists to engineer a robust, reliable device capable of high-performance imaging in a compact, mobile form factor.
General Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Hardware Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ Years Experience
- Technical Expertise:
- High-speed digital and analog circuit design, PCB layout, and schematic capture using professional design software.
- Proficient in using and designing for electronic communication standards (USB, USB 3.0, PCI-e, gigabit Ethernet, etc.).
- Strong technical documentation skills, with a commitment to clear documentation of all work.
- Prototyping and Lab Skills:
- Skilled in electronics prototyping, including fine-pitch soldering.
- Proficient in using lab equipment (e.g., power supplies, oscilloscopes, function generators).
Project-Specific Qualifications:
- System-Specific Knowledge: Familiarity with high-performance GPU-assisted computing systems, including cooling requirements, power optimization, and battery management.
- Thermal and Cooling Systems: Hands-on experience in 3D modeling of thermal flow and design of active cooling systems for compact, high-performance devices.
- Ultrasound Hardware: Knowledge of ultrasound systems hardware and experience in development (preferred).
- Mechanical Design: Proficient in mechanical design with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Design and Development:
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design and develop a portable, rugged ultrasound imaging system for high-performance applications.
- Engineer a durable chassis that provides a safe electromechanical environment for the system's primary modules, including the phased array controller, portable computer, GPU, display, and ultrasound probe.
- Component Research and Selection:
- Conduct thorough research on market components to identify those that best meet prototype requirements, with documented rationale for each selection.
- Electrical Specifications and Design:
- Define detailed electrical specifications for the power management system, including autonomous battery operation and charging systems.
- Develop an active cooling system tailored to the power demands of the portable ultrasound system.
- Supplier Collaboration:
- Work with suppliers for the phased array controller and ultrasound probe to meet system specifications, ensuring FDA compliance.
- Custom Probe Specifications:
- Develop electrical specifications for a custom, rugged, medical-grade matrix probe that minimizes impedance mismatch and electronic noise while maximizing gain.
- Mechanical Design Collaboration:
- Partner with mechanical engineers to create an ergonomic, portable carrying case, and coordinate with manufacturers to ensure rugged enclosure production meets project specifications.
- Prototype Integration and Testing:
- Oversee the integration of all system components into a miniaturized, rugged prototype, coordinating with external integrators as necessary.
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge healthcare technology by developing a resilient, high-performance ultrasound imaging system designed for portability and field use.
