The Role
The Sr. Director, Finance will report to the SVP, Finance. This role will provide overall leadership and direction to the financial business unit.
The Sr. Director, Finance will be responsible for working closely with the Senior Finance leadership team, facilitating appropriate strategic decisions and evaluation of performance both at a business unit and company level through the presentation of accurate, relevant, and timely financial information and analysis for the entire MCAP group of companies.
This role will also be responsible for protecting the reputation of the Company by ensuring the integrity of internal and external financial information and ensuring appropriate level of business controls are maintained throughout the finance function.
Strategic Planning & Analysis
- Provides support on financial modelling for strategic projects, which accords with best practice and identifies risk, issues and assumptions and enables the senior management team to make and implement effective decisions and mitigation strategies.
- Prepare presentations, analyses, forecasts and/or reports for the leadership team, Board of Directors meetings and for other forums as necessary.
- Works with leadership of each business to identify the needs of the business and opportunities that will result in meeting or exceeding budgets.
- Manages and reports on key performance indicators to be monitored by management.
Budgeting
- Plays an active role in the annual budgeting and planning process; monitor progress and changes.
- Engage closely with business partners to manage the gathering of key assumptions and data for the above.
- Improve, develop and maintain financial models, while increasing validation and documentation. Provides ongoing financial modeling and analysis expertise to all business partners.
- Assists in the development of financial budgets and strategies to support the achievement of short and long-term strategic objectives of Single Family, Commercial and DFG lines of businesses.
Financial Reporting
- Provide overall leadership and direction to the Controller and Financial Reporting team.
- Ensures external financial statements for IFRS are prepared accurately and in accordance with the respective standards.
- Implement changes to external financial statements as recommended by external auditors and approved by CFO & EVP to enhance the integrity of financial statements.
- Prepares regular reporting and analysis, including key metric reports and board reporting, reviews bank compliance certificates, and conducts ad hoc financial analysis as required.
- Manage booking of accounting entries, including those associated with projects, expense accruals, and engaging with the organization on capitalization etc.
- Review and approve selected high-risk monthly account reconciliations and trend reports and obtain explanation of variances and unusual items to ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately and appropriately in accordance with IFRS, corporate policies and regulatory requirements.
- Effectively prepares and/or reviews detailed analysis and memos on accounting treatment of transactions.
- Manages risk and minimize losses through monitoring and control reports, ensuring compliance requirements, audits and verifications are completed in accordance with company’s policies and procedures and all legal, regulatory and ethical requirements.
- Document and follow up on any discrepancies to procedures, with significant operation risk and escalate as required.
- Research and keeps abreast of new accounting policies under IFRS that would have an impact on the business. Documents and analyzes the impact of these changes on the companies and present a recommendation to management.
Management Reporting
- Prepares information for the SVP, Finance and the EVP & CFO to assist in the day-to-day management of the Company.
- Provides explanations and information to business unit leaders to monitor achievements and improve financial results for all lines of business.
- Ensure financial management reporting and processes are in place to support the ongoing and future needs of the business unit leaders.
- Develop a deep understanding of business performance, share insights and engagement with management to suggest actions and drive performance.
Financial Core Systems Management
- Responsible for core finance reporting systems management, including cost center and GL structure and ongoing improvement of structure to benefit efficiency and management reporting.
- Assess and recommend for execute the new transaction codes and changes to the general ledger chart of accounts for process/reporting improvements.
- Oversee the investigation of root causes of system errors or discrepancies and establish a process to address these go forward.
Financial Controls
- Proactively develop effective and efficient controls around existing processes as well as designing an effective control structure for new transactions.
- Enhance documentation of key processes, required for CEO CFO Certification sign off.
- Proactively work with internal stakeholders to determine the impact certain decisions will have to financial processes.
External and Internal Audit Management
- Manage the day to day external and internal audit relationship.
- Coordinates with external and internal auditors to ensure financial audits are completed in an efficient manner.
- Identify opportunities for efficiencies within the annual audit process.
- Manage various audit engagements and deadlines throughout the year.
Act as a Link to Managers, Staff, Outside Agencies and Customers
- Champion the company’s Vision, Mission and Values as set out in the Strategic Plan both internally and externally within the industry.
- Recruit and develop the right people that believe in and reflect in their behavior MCAP’s Values and culture.
- Establish, monitor and communicate performance standards to direct reports reinforcing individual results, work quality, continuous improvement, teamwork and achievement of MCAP’s objectives.
- Educate, coach and counsel staff to ensure they are empowered to effectively handle their roles in a confident and professional manner.
- Establish and maintain an effective system of communication throughout the business unit.
- Provide and distribute pertinent and relevant information to internal / external contacts.
- Act as a back-up to support Senior Executive Team.
What You Bring To The Team
- 5-10 years+ working knowledge in accounting environment such as audit, financial planning and analysis, or financial reporting.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, including GAAP, month end processes, accounting statements, etc.
- Knowledge of the mortgage industry.
- Proficient in Excel, Microsoft Word and accounting software packages.
- Ability to understand complex business structures and transactions.
- Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data in order to make recommendations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively monitor and develop staff.
- Ability to lead change initiatives and to foster a positive employee relations environment.
- Excellent verbal, and written communication skills with all levels of the organization.
- Proven diplomacy, tact, decision making and negotiation skills.
