Responsible for program planning and delivering the Recreation & Culture Divisions Sports and Culture Programs and conducting a high energy class that meets the program outlines and High Five principles (where age appropriate). Provide technical guidance on skills required for each sport as well as mentoring participants, other staff and volunteers and understand the different approaches required to teach different ages and abilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide instruction for participants in specific sport and/or activities as outlined by the program outline and core lesson plans.
- Incorporate and model the HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development in program delivery at all times.
- Monitor participant progress on an ongoing basis.
- Ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants by adhering to department Safety and Recreational Program Standards.
- Manage participants’ behavior to ensure safety.
- Use creative teaching approaches to meet the individual needs of participants.
- Ensure program space and equipment is appropriate and set up to maximize program delivery potential and safety of participants.
- Provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource to parents of participants.
- Promote program and provide information for progression in the sport program.
- Ensure all participants are registered correctly into programs, maintain attendance lists and perform any additional administrative tasks as required.
- Complete certificates for the participants of the program where applicable.
- Complete accident/incident, time sheet sign in paperwork, etc.
- Communicate with Supervisor regarding program issues or concerns.
- Prepare detailed lesson plans (including HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development, if appropriate) to ensure classes are meeting requirements in program outline and core lesson plans.
- Prepare age appropriate adaptations/modifications for the particular sport and/or activities that they are teaching.
- Prepare any materials to be supplied to participants.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year experience working with children/adults with disabilities.
- Graduate or currently enrolled in post-secondary courses/degree/diploma in Education, Social Work, Child and Youth Work, Recreation and Leisure, Disability Studies and/or related discipline considered an asset.
- The successful candidate must possess a HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development or High Five Sport Certification.
- The successful candidate must possess a valid Emergency First Aid and CPR B or Standard First Aid and CPR C (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, St. John’s Ambulance or the Canadian Ski Patrol) certification (must be recognized by WSIB).
- A Level 3 - Vulnerable Sector Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
- Physical exercises while instructing.
- Primarily indoor and outdoor community centre environment.
- Experience in a recreation setting.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Attention to detail in emergency situations.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $20.37 - $24.85
Hours of Work: up to 24 hours
