All clinical staff are expected to contribute to the academic agenda through one or more of the following activities: supervising students, teaching, academic service, scholarship and research.

The speech-language pathologist will work with children who have neuromotor disorders such as cerebral palsy who are up to the age of 19 years. Some of our clients have complex needs and are supported by various disciplines including medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, OT/PT Assistants, psychology, social work and communicative disorder assistants. The team works in collaboration with our community partners to provide a continuum of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides consultation (including prevention), evaluation, assessment, intervention and counselling to clients and families around motor speech and other communicative disorders.
  • Works in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team to inform integrated care plans.
  • Uses appropriate standardized tests and outcome measures in clinical practice.
  • Uses non-standard assessment tools/forms when appropriate.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other services, agencies, etc.
  • Incorporates goal setting in discussion with family/client.
  • Adapts approach to changing needs of clients and families.
  • Engaging family/client in goal setting.
  • Adheres to Centre/professional documentation guidelines.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with current literature, issues and trends of practice.
  • Participates in regular quality improvement activities to further refine clinical practice, equitable and efficient service for clients and families.
  • Shares new knowledge and best practices with colleagues, students and other professionals within the organization, professional body and community.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.
  • Other duties as assigned; enhanced hours of service are required at times.
  • Partners with community agencies.
  • Works collaboratively with Communicative Disorder Assistants (CDAs) to offer optimal care.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology.
  • Current registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).
  • Previous pediatric clinical related experience preferred.
  • Experience with providing assessment, consultation for clients with complex needs including Cerebral Palsy and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and co-operation in dealing with change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team.
