We currently have an exciting opportunity for you to bring your excellent work ethic to our Speech Language Pathology department.

In accordance with established vision and values of the organization and in accordance with professional standards and code of ethics as outlined by the College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of B.C., the Speech-Language Pathologist provides evaluation and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders to adult acute care inpatient/outpatient patients. The Speech-Language Pathologist may work directly with clients and/or with their caregivers or other persons who regularly interact with them for the purpose of creating environments that promote optimal communication/swallowing. The Speech-Language Pathologist contributes to the organization and the overall goals of the department/program quality assurance initiatives, meetings, and education.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days - 08:00 to 16:00

University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) is the largest Acute Care facility within the Northern Health region, and a hub for specialized health services. It’s also a teaching hospital:
  • Provides undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia.
  • Hosts residents in UBC’s Family Practice Residency Program
  • Is a key clinical education site for nursing and many health sciences students at UNBC, the College of New Caledonia, BCIT and other institutions.

Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Speech-Language Pathologist with The College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia
  • One year’s clinical experience with adults in a hospital setting and/or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver’s license where required.

  • Assessment and Treatment: Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments. Knowledge of communication and dysphagia standardized tests, measures, use of equipment and related techniques.
  • Teaching: Ability to teach and provide effective consultation to patients, caregivers, and other health care professionals.
  • Knowledge Integration: Integrates best practice and current research evidence to support professional practice decisions and actions.
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, caregivers, members of the interprofessional care team, both verbally (one-on-one and in groups) and in writing.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem-solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision-making skills using a systems approach.
  • Human Caring and Relationship Centered Practice: Ability to promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients and significant others, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy and social justice concerns.
  • Management: Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives and establish priorities. Manages time and resources, implements activities to promote cooperation among the interprofessional team and collaborates across disciplines.
  • Leadership: Promotes staff morale, engagement, and empowerment. Demonstrates creative planning for change and innovation, implementation of NH policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development of self and others.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
  • Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Windows based programs. Demonstrated ability in the use of e-mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
