Your Opportunity
One Permanent Full Time Position.
Capital Power is currently seeking an innovative and results-oriented individual to join the Capital Power’s Balance Energy Solutions team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and has a strong interest in energy and data centers.
As the Specialist, Balanced Energy Solutions, you will play a critical role in supporting the team as it seeks to commercialize power solutions for data centers. Reporting to the Vice President, Balanced Energy Solutions, this position is designed for a detail-oriented and analytical professional with a passion for the energy industry and data centers. The Specialist will contribute to identifying, analyzing, and advancing origination opportunities, while providing key insights and technical expertise to support strategic decisions.
You will contribute to our team by:
Market research and customer engagement
- Drafting and refining data center customer facing materials, such as proposals, presentations, and contracts.
- Collaborating with internal teams, including Commercial, Operations, and Engineering, to address data center customer questions and provide accurate, detailed insights that align with Capital Power’s capabilities and offerings.
- Analyzing customer and market data to generate actionable insights that guide business development efforts.
- Conducting in-depth market research to analyze trends, regulatory changes, and emerging opportunities in the U.S. and Canada energy sectors.
- Collaborating with internal teams to collect, maintain, and update databases of customer information, market trends, and deal opportunities to inform decision-making.
- Researching and documenting regulatory requirements, risks, and market dynamics in the U.S. and Canada to support origination strategies.
Site Assessment
- Assessing the feasibility of existing Capital Power assets and land parcels to support co-located data centers, evaluating critical infrastructure such as T&D availability, water access, natural gas availability, and fiber connectivity.
- Partnering with Operations, Commercial, and Engineering teams to analyze site-specific requirements and ensure alignment with data center needs.
- Supporting the Balanced Energy Solutions team in preparing site narratives and pitches for M&A, brownfield and greenfield development opportunities, showcasing site readiness and strategic fit for potential data center customers.
Business case and internal alignment
- Building financial models in collaboration with internal valuation teams to inform deal structures and pricing strategies for various stakeholders, including data centers and utilities.
- Preparing proposals, presentations, and comprehensive business cases for potential customer deals, ensuring alignment with internal stakeholders and senior leadership.
What you will bring to the role:
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, engineering, or related field.
- Education equivalency may be considered.
Experience
- 2+ years of professional experience, ideally in business development, trading, consulting, investment banking, or a related area.
- Familiarity with energy markets, power generation technologies, and sustainability trends is an asset.
- Previous experience (e.g., internship, formal research) in the energy, utilities, or renewables sectors is an asset.
Technical Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to translate complex information into actionable insights.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Experience with financial modeling, data analysis, or research in the energy sector is an asset.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid Office/Work from home position, with possible very minimal travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices.
- Some evening and weekend work is required.
