Special Needs Support Assistant - Part-Time Position

Position Overview

We're seeking a highly qualified, compassionate professional to provide part-time support for a 33-year-old woman with Autism and Intellectual disability who uses an iPad with a specialized vocabulary as her primary means of communication. This role requires someone who can engage effectively with therapy routines while providing a supportive and structured environment that respects her autonomy as an adult. The ideal candidate will have specialized training in therapeutic techniques or be willing to learn, and be dedicated to enhancing Kelli's independence, community integration, communication, and personal growth.

Schedule

  • 2-3 mornings per week (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM)
  • Up to 15 hours per week
  • Location: Client's mother's residence and community settings
  • Start date: Flexible, with preference for near-term commencement
  • 1 year commitment required

Qualifications Education (Current students welcome)

  • Pursuing degree in one or more of the following fields:
    • Occupational Therapy
    • Special Education
    • Speech Therapy
    • Psychology
    • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Required Certifications & Requirements

  • Current CPR certification
  • First Aid certification
  • Successfully pass LiveScan background check through DOJ and FBI
  • Valid CA Driver's License with clean driving record
  • Proof of auto insurance
  • Reliable personal vehicle
  • Working cellular device
  • Willingness to participate in professional training (AAC, team meetings, etc.)
  • Openness to learning from professionals

Preferred Experience/Certifications

  • Experience working with adults with communication needs
  • Knowledge of or certification in Conscious Discipline
  • Training in Pivotal Response Treatment or naturalistic environment therapy
  • Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
  • Experience implementing therapy protocols in natural environments
  • Background in supporting adults with developmental and communication disabilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support and reinforce therapy goals established by the professional team
  • Create engaging activities aligned with therapeutic objectives
  • Respect and promote independence and self-determination
  • Assist with iPad communication device usage as needed
  • Utilize a separate iPad with the same vocabulary system as Kelli to model communication
  • Coordinate with family and healthcare providers regarding progress
  • Maintain detailed documentation of activities, observations, and progress
  • Accompany client to community activities and teach navigation of public transportation
  • Advocate for client and model appropriate social interactions
  • Help client access community resources and develop friendships
  • Collaborate with the support team to implement individualized plans
  • Demonstrate community integration techniques to build independence
  • Engage in life skills development (such as meal preparation, grocery shopping)
  • Interact professionally with the client's support team
  • Be open to on-the-job training
  • Respectfully assist Kelli with activities of daily living as needed across her home and while out in the community

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities including but not limited to using email or text
  • Strong problem-solving mindset
  • Respectful approach to adult support services
  • Experience with or willingness to learn about and utilize alternative communication methods as needed
  • Understanding or ability to use an iPad (turn on/off, charge, navigate to apps)
  • Ability to accept and implement constructive feedback
  • Strong advocacy and interpersonal skills

Compensation

  • Hourly rate: $25-30 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
  • $150 hiring stipend upon completion of onboarding
  • $40 monthly gas stipend when providing community outings
  • $25 monthly cell phone stipend for shift coordination and communication
  • Mileage reimbursement for all client-related travel

Pay: $24.97 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 12 per week
